How many marks would this get?
The question is
Discuss psychlogical effect of custodial sentencing (16)
My answer:
Custodial sentencing is the use of prisons or other institution to protect the public, deter, rehabilitate and incapacitate criminals. Some psychological affects are: Institutionalisation, this is when the prisoner is accustomed to prison norms so find it hard to adjust to live outside of prison when they are released.Another psychological effect is stress and depression and lastly prisonisation, when behaviours that are unacceptable in the outside world are encouraged in prison through socialisation.

Custodial sentencing is brutal. Rates of suicide are 15 times higher in prisons than the outside world. The Prison Reform Trust have said that 24 percent of women and 15 percent of men suffer from psychosis. This shows that prison may do more damage than good.

However, benefits of prison may outweigh its psychological effects. for example some prisons have programmes such as anger management, training and education which is beneficial for prisoners and may even take away or avoid its psychological effects. Also having these programmes will reduce reoffending rates.

There are alternatives to custodial sentencing such as anger management that doesn't have much negative effects but politicians may refuse to use these as they want to appear tough on crime, therefore the benefits of custodial sentencing may be exagerrated

That is my answer I always aim for top marks for 16 marks but was struggling with this as the book mostly talks about custodial sentencing and evaluations of it, not evaluations of the psychological effects so idkkkk

Would appreciate any feedback or suggestion (:

So I'm not sure it's wise to share your answers here for fear of plagiarism or generally having your ideas/work stolen. I don't know how many words you're allowed or whether you need to reference so feel free to ignore parts of what I say.

Anyway, I would work on sentence structure and grammar particularly first (if this is your final answer) as there's some spelling mistakes and such. This just spruces up your answer and makes it easier to read.

I think you have a good start to the answer. It's often wise to begin with the definitions of any terms you're using which you've done. Maybe go into why prison can lead to an increase of anxiety and depression, it feels like you've glided over that quite quickly, when it's poignant to the question (psychological effects). Do you have any reference to backup the bold statement that custodial sentencing is "brutal"? If not, maybe consider rewording that or taking it out altogether.

I would say the therapeutic programmes available in prison can 'reduce' the negative effects that prison can cause, instead of take away and/or avoid it altogether. But you're getting across the notion that prison can be beneficial to prisoners as well so that's good.

Again, I don't know your word count, but it feels like it could be beefed up a little more with some extra info or going into a little more depth. Hope this helps.

Hey thank you so much for your answer! I should've made it clearer but this was just an exam question example i found online for a level. And I kinda just typed it out without reading through so its just on here I would've made mistakes. Also I struggle trying to remember psychologists or names for evaluations so I just leave it out most the time especially if its a long name but maybe I should try to. Thank you for the rest of the suggestions though they were actually useful, thank you!!!
