Look at this way: yes, moving is going to be expensive, but you will be getting paid £28 odd grand when you get here. Could be worse, eh?

£28k? Brilliant, I thought the most we could earn was £25-27k!

I had heard a rumour that we could earn up to £32k... is this true?

Hi guys,

Another long-time lurker. For the DAS people out there, I got an email this evening to set up a meeting with some people at the Department for Children, Schools and Family. It didn't say anything about the specifics of the vacancy, and said the meeting would be informal to see if there was a 'fit' between myself and the position, whatever it is. Much quicker process than I imagined, in fact faster than the real deal it seems.

Not exactly the department I had in mind setting out on the Faststream voyage, but here goes....
Good luck! I was on the recruitment website and there were EO positions at dwp and your dept. with 10 positions each. I'm wondering if they'll be offered to DAS applicants 1st.

I'm guessing you must have just missed the cut on your FSAC score then? How long until your meeting if you don't mind my asking?

25-27 is what cabinet office recommend, but I don't believe that is binding on the departments. Instad, from what I have read here, I think that they can pay you what they like (within reason.)

Upto £31k (any advances?) unless your a specialist in which case it could be more - £34k.

However, you might not want the department.

Also bare in mind a depts starting salary might be higher but the band narrower.

OK so I got an email to complete a bunch of pre-appointment checks on Friday and then some more stuff in the post this morning for DAS. No idea if that means they definitely want to put me somewhere or if it means anything at all as they said nothing about placements. They did mention that I should not quit any current employment until I hear more. What on earth is that?! An implicit job offer? There are lots of EO type jobs on the civil service recruitment website. Do I apply for those too or is that what the DAS team is working on with my application already? Is anyone else doing this? Sodding bank holiday weekend timing! :woo:

I think that all the DAS candidates were asked to complete the forms, so that if they do place you you can start work quickly instead of having to wait. I emailed Tracey Blower at the beginning of the week and someone else in the Cabinet Office replied saying that my papers had gone to a dept but that I should apply for other jobs if they appealed to me, to 'hedge my bets'.

So I think the forms shouldn't be taken to mean much, except as a positive sign that they are actively looking for jobs for us, and that if you like the look of the jobs you should go for it. I checked first because I didn't want to apply for a job that already had my papers, but I dont know if that can even happen.

I hope that is helpful, again its second-hand knowledge with a touch of conjecture. Good luck!

just in case anyone for TiB has been constantly checking their mail/progress page in the last week, I got word that they are aiming to announce to the results of at least the first week's FSB in the middle of this coming week. So apparently you don't need to read anything into not having heard yet and will hear soon, and it shouldn't be as late as the 'early June' date which was previously mentioned to me.

Quick question for you Quady if you're reading -

Those 31k and up to 34k for specialist figures you mentioned - did anyone on last year's TiB manage to go above 30k as their starting salary? Over 30k as an entry level salary really would be quite good.

In case the cabinet office haven't mentioned it already, for successful candidates who choose TiB over the other options there is a familiarisation day on the 11th of June in London 10am - 4pm. Basically to meet everyone and hear from departments so you're better informed in making preferences on where you would like to go.

Someone certainly got 30,500 (this year it will be 31) and they did just about manage to squeeze the extra 3k because they did units in IT at uni. Second highest was 29k. But the mode was for approx 28k. But there are three new depts so I don't know what their setup will be.

Another incredibly quick and useful reply. Thank you.

I heard about the 11th June event just a few days ago. If (as I hope of course...) it becomes relevant for me to be there I'm unfortunately going to be unavoidably out of the country. I've been told it's not the end of the word though as they can send me the information. I'd really rather not miss it though as it seems like it might have been a good chance to get a personal feel for the departments, people and maybe even to make people see you might indeed be worth that little bit of extra money.

At the FSB or later? Have they told everyone do you know? If not I think its a bit unfair to ask people to give up a day at two weeks notice but ho hum.

The difference between top pay and majority (excluding the 3k for that dept) is less than 2k after tax, it wouldn't be enough for me to target them specifically. See what you think if you get to the event on the 11th though. Its going to be an interesting day I think!

Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.

Later - it was when I was enquiring about when the results would be out, so it may well be that aside from those reading this forum, the first some people will know about the June event is when the results are out.

I have to ask - what exactly does the TiB programme entail? And how much IT knowledge do you need? e.g at least one programming language...or what? I plan on learning a couple over the next two years once my degree workload has disappeared.

When and who did you hear that from? I was told June when I called on Friday!!

Also - I was wondering if this means we are guaranteed a job - and at what point it would be safe to hand in notice from my current job.

Just wondering what are the old and new depts? Apologies if that's listed somewhere..

You don't have to know any programming languages. You just have to be able to demonstrate a general interest in and knowledge of technology.

Also, I can't understand why they're leaving such short notice for the event on the 11th...

If you pass the FSB then you're guaranteed a job, I'd hand in your notice when you're allocated a dept though unless you want to run off on holiday or something before starting.

In the pilot year (2007 competition) there were; HMRC, Identity and Passport Service (IPS), DCSF, DIfD, MoJ. Last year DWP joined and this year (should) see the Home Office, Treasury and Local Authorities/Communities.

Reema, no knowledge of anything technical is required. Since only a couple of central departments insource rather than outsource its rarely needed. Having said that in my role I have used some technical knowledge to help me out, mainly basic html, but that wasn't needed as such. It's quite possible to do TiB without any more technical knowledge than is needed for other schemes, its just talking about datacentres instead of pesticide/high speed rail/radiology units. I hope that makes sense. I'd agree with Aylia in saying an interest in technology and how business change is influenced by it is important though.

Found out i got to the 2nd round of the DS interviews. Anyone who's been through it care to offer any advice. Anyone else hear about their progress?

Good luck to all waiting on news

Congratulations RWD1, found out i made it through to the second round as well, so obviously are roles plays weren't quite as bad as we thought! Good luck with the next round!

Thanks, i heard back from them on Friday morning, but i was too excited all day to really have a check and see what else was going on in the fast stream world!

Yup it'll be a hectic week of boning up on foreign affairs. Luckily i've got most of this week off from work so i don't have to cram it all into the evening and weekend-which is a bonus and at least we'll know one way or another by 12th June-i don't think my nerves would have stood another long wait!

Good luck with the prepping!!

Has anyone else heard anything about DAS? For some reason I have become convinced that today will be the day, even though that is highly unlikely! The dreams have started....
