The Student Room Group

The Anime society

I have just realised that such a society has not been set up, despite a nice thread circulating around.

So, this is it, a society to discuss, reccommend and other activities regarding anime. I of course will be the president (otherwise known as wiwarin-sama), so whoever wants to join, just give me a buzz and we will see.

Sites you might like to visit:

animenfo - if you want to know about any anime series, go here.

Azureus website - a verry good bittorrent clinet, needed to download torrent files.

Some good info about buying anime and manga online can be found here

Good anime series

Naruto - One of the most popular anime series with western watchers, about a young ninja called Naruto. It is a great anime series if you like a good mix of action, comedy and seriousness. If you are just getting into the series, you will have to plough through 115 episodes at present, so be prepared for heavy downloading.

Prince of tennis - Don't let the fact that this is about tennis put you off, it is action all the way (all be it physics defying). The story revolves around a boy called Echizen Ryoma and his journey to become the tennis champion. If you dislike sport anime series, this might not be the anime series for you, but give the first couple of episodes a try to see. get infro here. If you do decide that you like it, you will have 152 episodes to plow through with more on the way.

Hunter x Hunter - Covering 62 episodes and 3 OVAs (with another series being scheduled for late next year, Hunter x Hunter is about a boy called Gon and his travels to find his father, who left him when he was very young. If you liked Naruto, you will definitely like HxH as the action and plot are similar and both lead characters are voiced by the same person (a female incidently). for more information check here.

Excel saga - This is a strange little series that only has the loosest of plot, but then again a comedy like this needs not a strong plot. Excel saga centres around a High school graduate that goes to work for ACROSS, an idealistic organisation that is bent upon world domination, led by the powerful Lord Ilapalazu. Since death is a daily occurance for Excel, the Will of the macrocosm (for some reason affiliated with ACROSS) frequently has to resurrect Excel and others.
If you do not like insane and nigh on incomprihensible plots or comedy anime series, excel saga is not for you, but otherwise, give it a try and see if you like it.

I suppose I should post all of the anime I have seen:

Pokemon - Was the first anime series I ever watched (even though it was in english, it was enjoyable, for a children's series). (lots of episodes with more being made all the time) (Licensed)

Cowboy bebop - I think it was the first subbed anime I ever saw and it got me hooked on Fansubs. I especially like Ed and Ein, they are just so excellent. tis a good sci-fi series and most definitely shows that anime is not only for little kids. (26 episodes) (Licensed)

Hellsing - Although only 13 episodes, it was a thoroughly good anime series, appealed to me especially due to the Vampire storyline. Again I would not reccommend this anime to children as it does have quite a lot of swearing and gore in it. (13 episodes) (Licensed)

Trigun - Another good sci-fi series which for the most part is a comedy but in the later episodes it did become serious. this was another series that got me further hooked on anime. (26 episodes) (Licensed)

Naruto - Without a doubt the best anime series being made at present and good if you want comedy, action, drama or romance, all with the back drop of ninjas. (117 episodes to date +2 OVAs)

Prince of Tennis - Now don't let the fact it's about tennis put you off, it is an excellent series with all the excellence of naruto. If you can get past the unrealistic physics and techniques then it is worth giving it a go. (152 episodes + 1 OVA)

Read or Die/dream TV
- We have 3 sisters who can control paper who are privite detectives. If it sounds silly then just watch some of it and you will be amazed. The action in it is excellent as well as the plot. (26 episodes) (Licensed)

ROD OVA
- Whilst an OVA of ROD TV it actually does not include any of the main 3 characters, it explains a main incident in the TV series and is worth a look to clarify the story a bit. (3 episodes) (Licensed)

Hunter x Hunter - Another excellent anime series that is quite similar to naruto and is full of action and a fair bit of comedy. I have heard that a new series is being made for late 2005, so we could be getting a continuation of the story. (62 episodes + 3 OVAs)

Yakitate Japan - A series about bread making. yes, you did read right, it is all about bread making, but it is surprisingly entertaining (well, it would be, it is a comedy after all) if you are at all sceptical, download the first episode to see if you like it. (8 episodes)

Airmaster - An interesting series about a highschool girl who is also a pro streetfighter and her antics. Comes across as both a drama and a comedy and is worth a look. (26 episodes)

Full metal alchemist - An excellent series about 2 brothers and their search for the philosopher's stone. Recently licensed this is an excellent series for a mid teenager but definitely not for children due to the odd bit of band language and lots of blood. (51 episodes) (licensed)

The OVA came first, and while TV can be watched to a point without having seen it, it is worth while watching the OVA before getting heavily into the plot as it explains a lot of what is going on.

Can anyone tell me why precisely we are not getting any more prince of tennis, despite more episodes are being aired every week?

There's only one group subbing this series and delays like this are the same for other animes. -For example One Piece is only subbed by Kaizoku Fansubs and is nearly 100 episodes behind.

It's a shame but they obviously don't operate on the same schedule as regular subbers who do weekly releases.

Not sure what's happened to Otaku Fansubs though. No new PoT for weeks (months?). They're behind but normally they release reasonably regularly.

There have been far fewer releases lately- or atleast it feels that way. A lot of the series I'm following seem to be dripping out very slowly and irratically.

Have spent the last few days on an AMV fest.

Does anybody else watch any AMVs? And if so, have any good ones to recommend?

I always keep checking animesuki with baited breat to see if another episode of yakitate japan or PoT have been posted, but to no avail.

I actually saw episodes 9 and 10 of Yakitate japan in raw format on torrentspy, which was really annoying, it seems they are getting behind as well.

I personally have never really bothered with AMVs, although I might start getting some to see if they fit. Where do you get your AMVs out of interest?

You can learn so much from anime, I have just found out the wasabi is made from horseradish when watching Yakitate Japan.
