I don't understand how in this picture, the name of this compound is 3-ethyl...
Shouldn't it be 2-ethyl?
Because if you count from the double bond then it's on the 2nd Carbon. How is it 3?

but if we count that way then it doesn't take in count the double bond. Do we not have to use the same numbering throughout?

you start counting from the side closest to the double bonds. according to that convention, you're correct. it should be 2-ethyl

soo the methyl group is on the 2nd C and ethyl group is on the 5th C?
soo the methyl group is on the 2nd C and ethyl group is on the 5th C?
basically for nomenclature you must but it in alpha numerical order where possible
look at this picture (sorry for lots of images im trying to explain this as best as i can)
so the blue is where we count from right to left this would give : 2- ethyl 5 methyl
but if you counted with the red numbers it would give 2- methyl and 5 ethyl
and because e comes before m you have to go with the one that is in alpha numerical order
sorry does this make sense, does it answer your question?

this is 2-ethyl..... if you rotate it you'll see it's the same as the displayed formula in the diagram you've shown. it could be a typo?
