Light intensity, glass thickness and voltage

I don't understand how light intensity, the thickness of glass and voltage are linked in any way
Here's the mark scheme:

Why is lambda the gradient? Does it stand for wavelength or something else?
I know the the N1/2 = Ln(2)/lambda comes from the half life equation
