There are around 2,600 independent schools in the UK, which educate around 615,000 children, some 7 per cent of all British children and 18 per cent of pupils over the age of 16 :

We shall not abolish Private school for the following reasons:
1) Job creation for staffs in private schools. Over a million jobs will be gone if no independent schools.
2) Education is one of the industry in UK, it attracts many foreign students. It is not just for school free, it also help the UK business as foreigners will stay, eat, shop, travel, bring in business, etc..
3) Government would have to fund more public schools for Home students if no private schools.
4) Private schools fund Home students.

Some of the grammar schools that are private changed from being a state school when their county changed from a grammar/secondary modern system to a comprehensive system, e.g. RGS Worcester.

There are quite a lot of state grammar schools but they tend to only be in some counties, e.g. Buckinghamshire, Warwickshire, Birmingham, Trafford (SW Manchester).
