i haven't written a first class problem question but an essay question for 3000 words i think about two weeks writing/editing, not including research. that means nothing tho and only tells you about me - not guidance for how to write a first class essay. may i ask why you're wondering?

I'm only a first-year, and I've only gotten one first in an essay and it was a formative assessment, but took 1 week - broken down into 4 general days of not too intense research, and three days of reading and editing but I rushed it and got a really low first (70).

I agree.
I would give yourself at least a week as you want time to research, plan and write it and then go back after a couple of days to refresh and polish it up. If you are an exceptionally knowledgeable undergraduate you could do it within a day, but you would have to have a very good working knowledge of the subject area to start with.
To put it into context,it would take me a couple of hours to write generic feedback and suggested answers for coursework and exam questions. I had 25 years experience and I wrote the questions!
