What do students wear at Oxford?

I'm sure I'll get a few 'smart' answers with people saying "clothes....duh" etc, but I'm going to ask anyway.

I'm fairly into fashion and clothes etc, and I realised I'm going to have to edit my wardrobe substantially so I can drive stuff down when I arrive for freshers next week. Soooo, I just wanted to know what sort of fashion girls are into at Oxford. Do people just slob around in jeans and tshirts during the day, or do they make more of an effort with dresses/skirts and makeup and jewellery etc. I definitely fall into the latter category, so was wondering whether I'd stand out or not

Basically what sort of things do girls wear during the day.

Oh and shoes! What shoes should I bring?

There are a lot of people there, presumably with enough variation for almost any choice of clothing to not look conspicuous most of the time.
I'm hoping jeans + hoodie will be standard.

Ehm I think they wear whatever they feel like? I mean, they should anyway... really...
What did you honestly think? That they're going to shut you out because you like to dress nicely? lol

I know I'm not being of much help, but really ^^; don't let anyone else influence what kind of shoes you feel like wearing.

I'm so tempted to say tweed...

I'm sure that no one will really mind what you wear! Like MSB said, there'll be lots of people there. And in Freshers maybe standing out a bit will be a good thing!
It really depends on whether you're good at waking up in the morning. If you are and you want to, you make an effort. If you're not, then you generally throw on whatever doesn't need ironing, plus your college hoodie.

There are some girls who look lovely and dress quite nicely all the time, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Besides, it's not like school. You should just wear whatever you feel comfortable in, regardless of what others may think

I think for some reason people think I'm worried about what others will think of my clothes! I'm not - just curious as to what the standard is like at Oxford...
I mean its not as if I can suddenly just run out and buy a whole new wardrobe to fit in, nor would I want to.

I'm sorry ^^

I think though that our replies answer that; people in Oxford don't follow a special kind of fashion.

It would be fun though, wouldn't it? xP I secretly think so anyway.
Lol you can always start your own fashion movement this fall and see what people say in 10 years.

Dress as you do in a country house. Never wear a tweed coat and flannel trousers - always a suit. And go to a London tailor; you get better cut and longer credit

I recommend sub-fusc. The boys will be throwing themselves at you.
lower than you're expected to, i suspect

Some girls make an effort. Some don't. Most are somewhere in between, usually with a college hoodie on top - Oxford is f. cold in the winter! So whatever you do, pack warm stuff.

As for shoes - flats for walking/cycling, boots (for the crappy weather, snow and ice), trainers (if you're that kind of girl) and then whatever you would wear for formal hall and going out. I generally try and pair it down to six pairs plus slippers - ballet pumps, knee high boots, flat boots, trainers, low-key heels, stillettos/otherwise inappropriate and incredibly uncomfortable but gorgeous heels that I will probably break an ankle wearing

Most girls with any hope of getting a man will be dressed in a timeless Edwardian Ensemble, complete with a (tightlaced) safety corset.

I will be dressed in a regency period style, with knee breeches, hair tousled about, waist coat, stockings, and perhaps a cravate a la mode de shelly.
I urge you to dress fashionably, aspiringlawyer.

I must confess that hoodie-girls annoy me. Aesthetically speaking.

Horn rimmed spectacles and pocket protectors.
Chrombie smoking jackets
plate armor

broad swords are a common fashion accessory.
Ugg Boots, Jack Wills Tracksuit bottoms, College Hoody, Hair tied up, grandmas pearls, starbucks venti.

Sounds quite good as a rap.

Seriously though, Im not taking the piss, I actually think its quite a good look in an "i havent made any effort but still look really good" kinda way.

Cold? Oxford? I don't think I've ever worn more than two layers in Oxford - even in deepest, darkest December.
