14-C is taken into plants by photosynthesis, ends up in biomass (animals eat plants etc). Animal dies and the amount of 14 C slowly decreases over 100's of years due to 14 C undergoing beta decay into14N. The older the material is, the less 14 C there is.....how may half lives in the 40000 years since the Neandertal died?...
