In 19th century China, did men perform the rituals at the graves? Did women play any role at all in the funeral process?

I'm doing an A level history NEA on the role and status of women in 20th C. China, and this came up in one of my sources. So, I was just wondering whether the writer of the source (the wife of an American diplomat) was being accurate in her description of early 20th C. Chinese society.
