Hey, so I’m currently applying to uni...
I’ve never really had a big social life due to controlling parents and am quite introverted because of this. I’d love to actually be social but I’m inexperienced in a lot of things everyone else has done. Will people judge me at uni if I’ve never drank before and so on? I’m asking because I really want to choose the social accommodation but don’t know if it’s a good idea. Also will I naturally just open up?

Hi Anonymous
I’ve really enjoyed my social life at my university. Before I went I wasn’t a massive drinker but I found it easy to socialise and make friends. That being said it’s really up to you how you socialise and if you want to drink ! I highly recommend joining a society because they can you can socialise with people with similar interests to you ! I’ve found there are many societies so something to suit everyone.
Have fun socialising at uni !

Hey man, I wouldn't worry about it. What you will find is people from all walks of life and a good proportion of them will have had that exact experience (I was one of them). University is a nice clean slate for everyone to start over again - Just go with the flow and you'll be fine I'm certain!

I was a bit like you before I started uni, I didn’t go out much or socialise at school and didn’t really make true friends until sixth year. I didn’t really drink much before I started uni, only at family parties. When you go to uni, you’re around the drinking culture and socialise at parties or hanging out with your flatmates. Towards the end of my degree, I wanted to go out less and preferred nights in with my friends. Don’t worry

I hope you're keeping safe and well.
I wouldn't worry about this at all! There'll be so many others who don't drink either, you can join clubs and societies to meet new people and participate in social events, you don't have to drink, you can just go along and have a good time! I know when I was a student I preferred to focus on my studies and not go out much, and I remember there being Freshers events that had nothing to do with going out and drinking, there were lots of events like tea parties, watching a film with popcorn!
I hope you have a great time at uni
