Do I take the general or specialism pathway for a primary education degree?

I have been offered places at the university of Gloucestershire for the general pathway and maths specialism for primary education. But which do I choose?

I am taking an A level in maths I am predicted a B but I think I will get a C. This won’t meet the entry requirements.

Which should I take?

Any suggestions would be great
Hello!
Congratulations on your offer, both opportunities are amazing!

I am a Primary Education student myself so I would like to help you out a little! I specialise in ages 3 - 7, so I study the Early Years curriculum in more detail and will do at least one placement in this setting. However, this does not mean that I cannot teach ages 8-11 as it is only a specialism. At the end of your degree, if you are recommended for QTS, this means that you can teach any age in a primary school as you are a qualified teacher, you just have an area of expertise.

In the context of your maths specialism, you can still teach general primary education but you will have a specialism in maths. This will look amazing on your CV and is great for applying for roles, such as the Head of mathematics. If you are willing to study maths more closely and would like to use this in your career, then it is a great option and will not limit you but if you do not choose it you of course can still teach maths! You could even choose general and study an additional education maths course later on in your career!

If you have been predicted a B then you are fully capable of achieving that! Don't doubt yourself. In the case you did not get the mark, your university might make adjustments or offer you the general path instead.

I hope this helps with your decision,
Lydia
