Make sure your papers have a clear argument. And focus in on that argument. A lot of 2:2 papers I see (and have written myself) often tend to be just a regurgitation of information from a textbook with no definitive argument or independence of mind. Draw up your argument and drill it home in the paper

But obviously, to get into specifics we’d need to read some of your work

Ok mate, it’s important to say at this point that you really shouldn’t be too worried. 2:2s in first year are very much the norm. The point of first year is that you’re very much in the process of learning how write and structure essays. Most of my essays in first year were 2:2s, and I’m now set to receive a First in my degree. It’s not what you get in first year, but what you learn from it.

Make use of your tutor too — ask them for advice and tips.

You need to look at any feedback.
compare your grades to the marking criteria, where are you doing welll and where are you performing poorly.

Pay carfeul attention to the assignment brief and any marking information that is provided.

Complete assignments early and then critic it, and be brutal with yourself, where can you improve. Can you find more evidence, more persuasive arguments, more thorough discussion....

Basically, make sure everything you’re saying is relevant to that argument, and backs it up. Also, making sure you address counter-arguments is a good way of bumping up your grade, in my experience.

I would recommend speaking to your tutor or lecturers about it. They are best equipped to help.
