So my car has failed its MOT and is gonna cost more then triple what we brought it for to fix. And I can't afford to even consider getting a new one.
So my only other alternative is a moped to take me to and from college.
But I need to know a few things first.

1. Do I need to pass a test to drive one seeing as I'm now 18years old and have a full drivers license, or can I just drive it around with an L plate on?
2. I need to go on country roads which reach speeds of 60mph. Which CC moped is best for me?
3. What are the regulations. So do I need to wear boots or a jacket. Obviously I must wear a helmet?
4. How much do they cost to run, petrol wise? I'll be travelling about 2 hours a day, 3 times a week and thats it.

Thanks for any help.

You need to do CBT, since you will have passed your driving test after 2001.

Mopeds are restricted to 50cc and a top speed of 31mph. Helmets are compulsory, but nothing else.

I believe you need a provisional moped license to drive with L plates. Before you do this you require to do a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). Mopeds can't really go at 60mph with the standard 50cc engine, so you realistically need to do your full license (I'm afraid I'm not sure what type of license you would require or the cc required for 60mph).

As far as I know you don't need to wear a jacket or boots, but it's advisable.

Ahh right. I know now that I need a scooter not a moped. I never really knew there was a difference. *duh*
I like the look of this one: http://www.scooter.co.uk/125cc-scooter-cruiser.html
and it says that its suitable for
SUITABLE FOR 17+ WITH CBT LICENCE
FULL UK EEC CERTIFICATE
Does this mean all I need to do is the CBT course to get the certificate?

Why a scooter and not a motorbike?

All you need to do is do a CBT, which takes like half a day then you can ride with L plates.

125 is the way to go.

A moped cannot go over 31mph. If it does the restrictor has been taken off-this is illegal as it is now classed under a different type of automobile (motorbike).

The engine cannot be more than a 50cc

Thats alls i know lol

1- CBT as said to ride a 50cc scooter with L plates, or i think an 125 with L plates, but you'd have to check .(http://www.best-motorcycle-informati...-training.html) It only lasts 2 years

2- a 125 would do 60mph.

3. you must wear a helmet, if your doing 60mph, if you come off you will remove all your skin if you are not wearing proper gloves, a jacket - gortex or leather, and at least decent jeans, proper trousers are better

4- my bike does 260km to a tank, which costs about 15£

but i do ride a motorbike

Sorry what Bathwiggle fails to point out is a 125cc WOULD do 60, but it wouldn't be happy about it....

I would never be so cruel to my YBR. How much is your car going to cost to fix?

Firstly, sell the MOT fail car - even if it's scrap you'll still get close to £100 for it (and somebody will come to your house to take it away). The scooter that you posted a link to costs £700. You can easily buy a decent enough car for that sort of money - just check Autotrader, eBay and Pistonheads classifieds and you'll be surprised what you can get. You mentioned that you travel 2 hours a day, and I reckon you'll be pretty stressed and exhausted after being on a scooter for that long...

I would never do 60 on my bike. I love it too much.

But you would be exhilarated and thrilled if you'd been on a bike for 2 hrs

A 125cc doing 60 is always a comedy sight to behold. With Easy Rider on the back...
