Should caning be reintroduced into schools?

A fifth of teachers would like to see the cane make a return to the classroom, a survey has found.

The Times Educational Supplement questioned more than 6,000 teachers and found one in five supported corporal punishment in extreme circumstances.

The idea was more popular among secondary school teachers, where 22% were in favour, compared to primary school staff (16%).

Headteachers and their deputies were more strongly opposed to the cane, with only 12% in favour.

Corporal punishment was made illegal in state schools in 1987 and in private schools in 1999.

An official at the Department for Children, Schools and Families said: "Violence against children is clearly unacceptable and illegal."

Should the cane make a comeback? Did your school use it? Did it improve pupils' behaviour? Are today's methods of discipline better? Is any sort of corporal punishment acceptable in schools?

I think teachers should reserve the right for caning in extreme perposes.

I think it should be used, but sparingly. Not for forgetting a homework or getting a spelling wrong, but for continued rowdiness, intimidation etc. Discipline has clearly deteriorated, children now have such an attitude - "you can't do anything to me".

i think caning should be bought back but only should be used for certain reason, not for forgetting homework.

Children need consequences that they are scared of for their actions. Teachers are almost powerless and strike no fear into the children who want to be naughty.
A bit too late now. :frown:

I used to have some really hawt female teachers. Wouldn't mind if they used the cane on me. :coma:
I think Teacher's do need some sort of deterrent against some of the abuse they get, however extreme circumstances only.
No, because no young person would let it happen. They would just walk out.

I don't think it would do any good. I mean, look at the mess the current generation of adults have made of things - corporal punishment didn't help them :P
How about taking a survey of the parents? If I found a teacher was using disproportionate measures I'd thump him one.

I can just imagine all the chav parents raising merry hell if their kid gets the cane. The cane and the slipper were around when I was at school.....not too sure they actually did any good really.

How about actually getting these parents to take some responsibility? Personally I feel in many cases that the parents should be punished at the same time as the child.

That's the problem.

Parents are like "don't do that to my kids" when their kids are being rowdy, horrible, and in extreme cases, stabbing people. Their kids NEED discipline and parents refuse to accept it.

There's that as well. But then why should teachers have the same powers as a parent?

actually its not the fault of all parents, there are some parents who do teach discipline to their children

In reality the worst thing for your education is a class the teacher can't control. I myself go to a catholic grammar school, stereotypically very strict. However it is not, it seems kids can get away with anything behavioral wise, there's no real effective punishment in place.

I imagine the situation in more underprivileged state schools is much worse. Corporal punishment when the child continually misbehaves or disrupts, I think would be a beneficial deterrent.

In this day and age though I doubt corporal punishment will ever come back

Because its going to reduce the chances of the next generation being full of Asboid's. Frankly I feel that they should also send anyone who gets suspended off to boot camp, and subtract from summer holidays as punishment.

:ditto: I know that i would have worked out. I know it's easy to say now, but i definitely would. I wouldn't let anyone hit me, not a parent or teacher.

It would solve some immediate behavioural problems, but long-term benefits for the affected children are questionable. And it's barbaric. So no, an alternative solution is required.
