English/history Degree Useful Career Wise

Im looking to do either english or history at oxford hopefully, but ive been told the degree isnt very useful career wise...and i should go for something like PPE or Law

Career wise, id like to either work in the city at an investment bank etc, as a lawyer, or perhaps something in politics.

What are the sort of jobs available with either an english or history degree, or a joint hons in both.
In all honesty? A degree in English or history is useless without a PhD or some other kind of post-grad qualification.
I have a degree in English and am apparently unemployable in any job that I actually want. I enjoyed my degree, but I'm not too happy now.

I want to be a journalist so I'm an English major. I'm feeling positive that it was the right track to take, but I don't think any major can guarantee a great job - just improved chances of one. The handy thing about English though is the foreign language skills. I'm also thinking about teaching English in France or Japan.

I think there are things you can do with English/History but you have to work a lot harder for the jobs. Good luck!

Hah. Except for the horrible irony of ending up *overqualified* for jobs without a graduate entry procedure/scheme. Which is true for much of the arts sector. (I want to work in theatre production. No one will give me low level administrative jobs because they think I'll get bored and leave. No one will give me more senior jobs because I don't have the requistive year's experience in a professional theatre.)

Well, if you go to Oxford, I shouldn't think that choosing English/History will disadvantage you from management consultancy or law. (My lawyer friends tell me that having done the law conversion course rather than a full degree doesn't disadvantage you.) That said, I know very few English students who took the City/law route - so if you're sure that's what you want to do, perhaps you might enjoy a different subject more.

This really isn't true. English and History undergraduates have the potential to land top jobs, with law and management consultancy being popular options. Just that like every other non-vocational subject, the degree alone is not enough.
