this question is about lithium carbonate
lithium carbonate is used in medicines
lithium carbonate contains lithium ions and carbonate ions
a student tests the tabled for lithium ions and for carbonate ions
the student used
-a metal wire
-dilute hydrochloric acid
-limewater

plan an investigation to show the presence lithium ions and carbonate ions in the tablet.
you should include the tests for ions
6 MARKS
Starting off with carbonate ions, you would want to do the carbonate test.
So you would add Hcl to the solution. Then bubble the gas produced through limewater.
So how would you know co2 is produced?

Next for lithium ions, you would want to a flame test using the metal wire.
What colour would the flame turn?

the carbonate doesn't show any colour on a flame test so it doesn't matter - it would just be crimson from the lithium ion

limewater goes from colourless to cloudy (white) when co2 bubbled through

because the question is about a tablet, so a solid, how would we do it? leave it as it is or dissolve it?
