I have to crash higher modern studies and I had no choice about it. Can anyone give me any advice about what it would be like to crash higher it? I haven’t done any modern studies since S2. Any suggestions on how I should prepare myself or what I should focus on? Anything for source questions? Thanks

Hi! I'm doing H Mods right now but I did do N5. Lots of people in my class are crashing it this year though and have not found it too bad.

Have a look on Amazon - there are study guides there that are useful (I use the Leckie & Leckie ones). They can be a bit expensive though so you could ask your school if they have any resources that could help you.

On the SQA website there are Past Paper Questions and if you look on Understanding Standards (SQA) then they have completed exam papers and assignments that have been marked so you can see what is expected of you and how the marks are allocated in each question.

How come you have no choice?

Message me if you have any specific questions, good luck

Hi, doing Higher Mods this year also. Honestly Higher Mods isn't really that tough - and the structure of the exam differs quite a lot from N5 so you'd only really benefit from having more background info for this year - but you'll be taught it all again anyways. My advice is to write out model essays and ensure you're all prepared for answering questions. Each topic get yourself a 20 marker essay written and try to memorise best you can. If exam question is 12 marker, just write some of the paragraphs.

For next year, take these, these are some resources that may help you. You may need to log in with your glow login:

Exam Papers

Both SQA and textbook papers. Some papers are older which don't reflect the current exam structure and are in the Pre 2018 folder however the essay questions are the exact same structure.

Textbooks

The Leckie, How to Pass Second Edition and Need to Know all contain up-to-date examples although your teacher is likely to give you this stuff anyway. The 3 HG textbooks are often used in class.

The 'extra' folder contains N5 books too, if you wanted to revise it prior to Higher. Note only one of the Unit 2 and 3 topics will have been covered.

Hey! I currently take higher modern studies and i got an A at national5, i know a few people crashing it this year and they seem to be managing fine! The course content for higher is different from national5 anyway with the exception of part of the democracy uni, my advice would just be to keep on top of your notes and regularly review them, practice writing out the essays and practice the source questions. Good luck!
