The Philosopher's Corner 2005

Hey there, I've seen a few people who have received offers to read Philosophy in '05 and have spoken to a couple already.

Thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and create a thread for those of us who've been fortunate enough to get an offer

Here's the list thus far:

Rik_Rock (me) - Sidney Sussex
Adhsur - Trinity
ChocolateOrange - Newnham
Zarathustra - Newnham
Reema - Girton
Coldfish - Queen's
Groovy_Moose - St. Catherine's

About me (as requested):
I'm Rik and provided I get my grades, I'll be attending Sidney Sussex in October, w00t!!
I love alternative music of any kind including rock, metal, grunge, punk, ska, indie, punk, acoustic and anything else with some good guitar . I enjoy Italian food and my hobbies include damn near anything. I've been known to play tennis and badminton, I play bass guitar, enjoying pubbing and (rock) clubbing, oh and playing pool! I have been known to indulge in so-called 'geeky' hobbies such as pen-and-paper RPGs, which are great fun! I find I can get on with pretty much anybody, so go ahead and ask/pm me if you want to know anymore, or add me on MSN (address in my profile).

See y'all in October!

Go ahead and post here if you've got an offer an tell me a bit about yourselves as well .

Oh, and well done!

Hi guys, I have an offer from Newnham! Don't know the grades yet because I was pooled (from Newnham) and the admissions tutor who phoned said she'd have to check. Can't wait to go into school tomorrow and tell everyone I haven't told already! And oh, the glory of being announced in assembly...cringe .

About me:
Scottish, doing AH English, Latin and Physics, can't decide whether insurance choice will be St Andrews or Durham (btw same college as you, Rik Rock ), some favourite things are skiing, fencing, trumpet, reading and art stuff. Don't know what else to put really, and listing this kind of thing always makes me feel silly...

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you all in October! (Assuming, as my family keeps helpfully reminding me, that I manage to get whatever grades it is they want...)

It gets announced at your school? Is that for every uni or just oxbridge?

*Sorry to invade the realm of philosophy. But i've always enjoyed it. And there's not much else going on

I don't mind, so long as we don't get dragged completely off-topic.

I'll make a list of names and colleges at the top of this thread and if anybody expresses an interest, I'll add a little about myself there as well.

Just Oxbridge. Very unfair, I know, but our rector loves announcing things. We even get the result of the 1st Year D team's hockey match every Monday morning, for example. Along with all the others, and the rugby ones, and any other matches in any other sport at all.

And Rik Rock, I'd be interested.

Hey my name's Reema...I'm at Girton, which I think is an amazing college. Information about me; favourite philosophers Ayer/Rawls though not limited to them! In love with pop/rock music; Savage Garden/Darren Hayes, The Calling, as well as Radiohead, Bright Eyes, Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Interpol (that sort of thing....).

I quite like football, looking to get back into the game which I've had a lengthy absence from at school at Girton, I like writing and reading poetry (lots of Eliot!), a fan of Dostoyevsky and Orwell. Just randomly typing whatever comes into my head. Oh yes I love Bollywood (am an Indian), and Indian food. Hoping there are lots of Indian restaurants at Cambs.

That should be it for the time being,
Congratulations to all you philosophers, and see you next October

It's in the first post under the list. Now it's your turn :P

Oh, and good luck surviving that assembly! Nobody will resent you for it, I hope?

Apart from the football, I think you are practically a me! Or very much like anyway!

We must do something bollywoody at Cam. I don't really want to get out of touch with the films!

Oh yes Bollywood-y sounds great!! I got a PM from someone telling me to join IndiaSOC (a bit random and early but sounds interesting).

I don't know - start up a society or something if it doesn't already exist?

there's 2, in the centre of town, as far as i know. could be more, but i didn't really explore the place last term. the maharaja, which seems fairly posh, somewhere between magdalene college and new hall. and there's the curry king. the curry king is usually full of the sports/drinking societies, so unless you're in a very small group (in which case you'll be seated downstairs away from the chaos) i'd advise you to stay away. food isn't bad there, never been to the maharaja though.

Yep definitely! You better not be joining/creating these societies and not telling me about them!

Of course not, Rushda ! Didn't I just tell you about IndiaSOC ?!

Besides, I need help converting people to those old classics; Mother India, Devdas, Lagaan, as well as keeping up to date with the new stuff myself ...

Maybe they'll have an indian radio station...

That's so unjust!!! Not just for you, but for everyone. I can't believe that! I hate it when people have the attitude that oxbridge is in another league compared to other uni's.... it really isn't in terms of academia.

What kind of school is it? (sorry, I don't mean to be pushy, I'm just kind of interested  )
Reply 15
Probably independent . It's like with us, Oxbridge admissions are mentioned on end of year letters; as a method of telling "performance".

Yes, very unfair and unjust, but it's tradition and people are stuck in their ways. And a lot of them are brought up to believe that Oxbridge is the best without looking at things objectively.

Woh!" great music taste... maybe I should start hanging with the philosophers!

Same can be said for Rik_Rock! :hello:

Rock on. The Smashing Pumpkins are great, (were), but Billy is a fool :frown:

What instruments are we all on? (if any) I'm playing guitar too much, a little piano and I sing in the choir
(quietly 'cause I'm not too hot  )

*sigh*. probably is independent. I take it your school is too?
My school normally send maybe 1 or 2 people to Oxbridge. This year I'm the only person who has got a place :frown: .
Reply 18
Yes, mine is too . Don't worry too much about it, although I know it's really frustrating. I'm sure attitudes will change over time.

And well done on getting into Oxbridge! Not bad, the single best, eh ?

Our school sends about 15-20 a year (yes, v high!). So far 6 have got into Oxbridge - one of them being me, and the other Eternal Fantasy on TSR.
I'm a philosopher... but I'm just waiting for a phonecall.
