Music Management/Marketing Careers

Hi, I am currently in year 12 and very confused about what do after sixth form! I'm really passionate about a job in the music industry, off-stage and more in the business side of it. I have seen internships with record labels such as Sony and UMG, however, I was interested to know what degrees would suit this style of career best, or whether a university degree is necessary at all. I have been looking at degrees in marketing, however, if anyone has any experience in this industry or knows of apprenticeships or jobs that would help get me into this field of work, it would be muchly appreciated. Thank you!!

hey! bit of a delayed response here, but feel free to pm me - might be able to help you out a little in the future. i wouldn't say it's essential yet, but i'd maybe try and figure out what aspect of the music industry you're most interested in -- it sounds like maybe the marketing side, but whether it be promoting, a&r, publishing, etc. ultimately, i don't think your degree matters too much or is essential? i have a degree in social sciences, and a lot of people i've met have been happy that i don't have formal training tbh. i think w music people come into it from so many eclectic positions. but at the same time, if you already know it's what you want to do it can be a good opportunity to get to london/learn something you like/network etc! but yeah, not essential. people care a lot more about what you've done already! not sure what your experience is like, but whilst you're at sixth form could be a good time to start getting involved. not sure how it works with throwing shows before yr 18, maybe a less feasible route lol, but would defo try to get to grips w your local music scene! blogging's a great way too -- they're still used and watched by industry people lol. if you have time, starting to write for a discovery blog is a good way to prove you have a decent ear (& develop your own taste), connect with new people & build your portfolio. if you have any mates at college that make music too, give them a hand! maybe you could informally manage them? all something you can include and a good time to experiment  bit long sorry, but excited for you, feel free to msg me anytime!
