Currently, I find myself staying at my new home alone. As I browsed for something to watch on Netflix, I found a horror film.

Would you watch a horror movie whilst home alone?

I tend to watch people play horror games, as opposed to watching horror movies. I wish I could watch more.

But for me, the horror genre coupled with a fear of the dark isn't good for the sanity

No, I find a lot of them incredibly cheesy and predictable. You seen one about one type of horror, you've seen all the others.

Part of the reason for watching them is that they're cheesy

If they were just cheesy I'd still watch them, I mean Grease is cheesy and I rate that, but it's the predictability I can't get past.

I also kinda like that for this reason: I know what's coming and yet I still get scared. The mark of a good pure horror film.

Thrillers/mystery hybrids are probably your thing. Pure horror films are literally of this style: we scary. Nothing else.
