i’m currently in a long distance relationship and i am taking a gap year before going to university. however, my boyfriend who is from the states is currently taking a gap year and he said he took it ‘for me’ even though i told him you can do the things you’ve wanted but he’s decided not to. we talked about going to travel to japan ages ago. i just told him for my gap year, i want to travel to japan as a solo and he got upset and angry. he said i gave him false hope and i only think about myself. am i a bad person for wanting to go by myself?

No, you aren't a bad person you are allowed to want to do stuff on your own and you should do stuff on your own especially if you are in a relationship. maybe explain to him why you want to do it alone. Then talk to him about what you both want to do together and plan the trips so he doesn't feel like he is being left out or been given false hope, but don't do anything you don't want to. Remember this is your life. I know you will love him but this is your life and you are allowed to do things that don't involve him.

You’re not a bad person , If you had before said you wanted to go together he will have gotten his hopes up etc then I could understand a bit but you still have a right to go by yourself
