I tried using an Xbox 360 controller walk through and the buttons are mapped but I am unable to use them in the actual game. However, if I pause the game, open xpadder, I can slightly use it in the menu.

You can just plug your Xbox One controller into the PC via USB and it should work fine if the game supports using a controller. No need for additional software.

Xpadder is software used for fully remapping the buttons on the controller, even in games that don't support it natively, which is what I'm guessing they're trying to achieve.
