Do you think the single transferable vote is too confusing for people to understand compared to the MMP system?

No it's fine. X Factor use it. The only differences are that X Factor you ring up again to say your next preference when your first is knocked out while STV you say it beforehand, and X Factor you can ring up lots of times but STV you have one ballot paper.

Depends what aspect of it you're talking about. The actual process of how to fill out a ballot in STV isn't all that complicated, no. Nor are the motivations for using it - it produces generally proportional outcomes while maintaining the voter's ability to vote for specific local representatives, rather than just a party bloc. The actual mathematics of how voter preferences are allocated to elect particular candidates can be a bit more more confusing, sure - but to be honest, voters do not particularly need to understand that aspect.
