Yesterday I witnessed Tottenham suffer an embarrassing loss to Arsenal at 2-1 and got to thinking is there a way to work out the probability of such events before the match even begins? Of course for football fans who know the teams and players well they might be able to predict the more likely outcomes but is there any such formulae or rules one can use to decipher the outcome of every football match? Also, in such an instance what factors and details would need to be known about each individual player etc.

Football is such a complex sport that the number of variables and transient nature of it mean accurately determining such a thing would be impossible. Big data and machine learning is probably the best bet predictor.

Look at betting odds. They are probably as close as it gets, millions poured into those algorithms.
