It doesn't make sense to ask "before that", the provisional government only existed after the February 1917 revolution.

I've read a lot about the Russian Revolution and yet it's hard to think of much for this. Appointing Kerensky as its leader to replace Prince Lvov seemed like a good move at the time, he was respected by both moderates and the more revolutionary types and seen as someone who would be a good mediator between the remnants of the Duma and the Petrograd soviet.
The Provisional Government managed to help repel Kornilov's coup, although in doing so partly doomed themselves by releasing Bolsheviks from arrest.
And following the July days they did a pretty good job of suppressing threats from revolutionaries.
