Deciding between Lancaster University and University of York

Hi, I am struggling to decide between Lancaster University and University of York to study computer science. For your information, Lancaster University has an overall higher ranking than University of York, but University of York has a higher ranking in subject-wise (CS).

I would like to hear some opinions / suggestions from other people about the universities I mentioned above in general or the CS course they provide.

Thanks.
I attended a mid-range university and I found that the ranking scores aren't always accurate to the experience. E.g. Oxford rates very highly but apparently it is a miserable learning environment. My uni was in the low-80s when I started, and it was a brilliant experience. I'd always suggest to go with whichever uni 'feels' right (based on visits, online tours, module choices, tutor specialisms etc) rather than rating

Hi @Harry.Y
Have you managed to chat to current students studying these courses ? I’m a student ambassador at Lancaster and you can chat to current students through unibuddy - https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/chat/
I think this will give you some student perspectives and enable you to ask any questions you have about the course studies and student life !
I don’t study cs myself but I’m a current student at Lancaster university so if you want any insight about student life, I may be able to help. So let me know if you have any questions for me.

Thanks

My eldest studies at lancaster for physics and really enjoys it there. She too had lancaster and york down as options. Both are as good as each other, however she felt the accommodation was more affordable than yorks (and better (she wasnt a fan of derwents or vanbrughs))
The student ambassador is right to chat to some other students on uni buddy. They will give you a better scope on the course. Shes living in the city next year and will return back to campus for 4th year (for now shes sticking with flatmates for years 2 and 3) . Both cities are nice, cant fault any of them. Lancasters got a slight edge to being on the coast to morecambe by bus, wheres Yorks Scarborough is on the A64 which can get snarled up with traffic (done that route for many a year). York takes the edge on night life(clubs) but only slightly. Lancaster I think wins on bars though as I lost count when I walked round there lol

Hi Harry Y,

First of all, these are both great choices! It's so important that you make the right decision for you and it's great that you are asking these questions so early on.

I am a Graduate Ambassdor here at York, I studied my undergraduate and postgraduate degree here and loved it! I didn't do the course myself but luckily, our fantastic bloggers who are studying right now, can help to shed a light on the experience of computer science here:

- Things to look forward to about Computer Science at York by Will (a first year Computer Science student)
- A day in the life of a Computer Science Student by Hari (a second year Computer Science student)
- Things to look forward to about Computer Science at York by Natasha (an undergraduate Computer Science student)

In terms of thinking about the university experience at York more generally, computer science is based on Campus East, where I was also based. It's a beautiful, green campus that is continuing to develop with a new college been built as we speak. It's also only a 5-10 minute walk to our Campus West (our other campus at York) and a short bus journey into the city. York is a wonderful place to live, I'm still here now! The city center is vibrant, safe, historic and beautiful with lots to do during your down time. It's also been voted one of the best places to live in the UK which says it all

I hope that I've helped to answer some of your questions about studying at York. If not, please drop us a message and I'm sure we could put you in touch with a current student in Computer Science!

Many thanks,

Laura
Graduate Ambassador
