I think its quite normal. I experienced it a lot throughout my 4 years of undergrad studying in a big city in the US (just graduated and moved back to Europe). My first semester was great because I made a lot of friends, but they were all seniors and graduated a few months after I got there. Naturally everyone my age had found their own friend groups by that time and had gotten pretty close, while I was all of a sudden left without any friends and was basically on my own. I made a few friends throughout my remaining years, but no one I would call close friends, just people I would go to a restaurant with and catch up with every other month or so. It was extremely lonely, and I got super depressed, especially seeing everyone else around me going out to clubs and parties on the weekends, while I was stuck inside watching netflix cause I didnt really know anyone no matter how hard I tried. I think also the expectations in relation to having friends in uni plays in a lot. Everyone is expected to have a bunch of friends and make all these memories, and when you dont it just stings a little extra. So I definitely know how you are feeling, and its no fun at all. I hope things get better for you and that you make some friends along the way, although it might be harder now with COVID. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone, and I am sorry that you feel this way.
