Woodhouse or Camden school for girls?

Hi. I want to do medicine at uni so I chose Biology, chemistry and English to take at A levels. However, I am unsure on which sixth form/college I should go to since I got offers from both Woodhouse and Camden School for girls sixth form. If anyone has experiences in these subjects and go to the colleges I mentioned then please tell me what it’s like to study there. I want to get A*AA but I’m worried I will not get the right teaching to achieve those grades. Also for anyone taking English Language, is it good and worth it to take for a levels? I am predicted a 9 at GCSE.

Thank you.
is anyone going to Camden girls for sixth form September 2021?
Hi, both good but I heard the teaching is better at Woodhouse. Woodhouse really has excellent reputation at the moment and I know quite a few people that go there and they are all very happy. Plus all new in Sixth Form and good balance of boys and girls while CSG has definitely far more girls than boys. Woodhouse definitely has better facilities and grounds also.I would also choose considering how far you are from the school though.Good luck, in any case you can't go wrong!

Maybe me?
Hi - can I ask where you are in London? I’m in East Finchley and am on waiting list for Camden and got an offer for woodhouse

I feel Camden would be more hands on teaching and more focus, as Woodhouse has such a huge amount of students per cohort and if you're used to have a lot of focus and attention on you with smaller class sizes in secondary, it may be difficult for you to adapt. This being said, I have a few friends who go there and really like the environment and teaching, it's totally up to how you would adapt and the teaching style you like. Good luck

I don't take any of those subjects but I'm a yr12 at Woodhouse. These are the pros and cons in my opinion:
- better teachers (amazing at their job and super nice)
- better facilities
- staff always sending us really helpful emails even if we don't ask for them (e.g. webinars, work experiences, etc)
- a lot of extra curricular and clubs
- high street is like 5 mins away
- some students are judgmental af
- a lot of homework (5hrs a subject per week), but also a lot of freedom and time to do them
- they preach letting students be independent (e.g. manage their own time and what they do in/out of college)
- no dress code
- if you're not an independent learner, then you'll probably struggle. Teachers won't chase after you to do your work like in secondary, if you want the grades you have to take the initiative yourself. Obviously, they'll try their best to help if you ask them though.
- small college, so hard to find anywhere quite

That seems like a dream college. Which subjects are you doing? Someone who went to woodhouse who did 2 of the same subjects that I want to do said the opposite about what you said. They said teachers were awful and unsupportive/bully. That made me double think about going to woodhouse but I really want to go!! :frown: I need to get the grades but I’m unsure if I’m an independent learner so idkk... I’m so stressed

Psychology, economics, and maths. If you're not sure about teachers, I recommend talking to them on the open/taster days to meet them and also asking the students volunteering of their impressions too, especially the subjects you're interested. I haven't met any bad teachers, but tbf I generally stay on one side of the college anyways. I don't know when they start next year but try going to the school that starts first and if you don't like it as much, ditch it for the latter. I have a lot of friends who have done that and schools allow you usually to drop within a week or 2. You're probably an independent learner if you think you don't need a lot of help from teachers, i.e. lesson time is enough for you to understand the topic they teach.

I don’t think they do taster days because of COVID :frown: so you mean I can enroll for 2 schools at the same time? That’s quite smart to try both of them ahaha. Also I don’t usually understand a lot of things during the lesson. Maybe because my teacher isn’t that great since everybody else thinks they don’t teach well so I can’t be the only one. But if I’m not an independent learner then it’s going to be scary going to Woodhouse. But the problem is, Woodhouse has all the subjects I want to do and csg only has 2 (bio and chem).

I'm not saying you can't go Woodhouse if you're not an independent learner because they definitely will give you the help if you need it. I've just noticed though that if you are then it's easier to thrive there. Also if you have friends who can help then that probably won't matter a whole lot. If you are planning to enrol twice then make sure you ask the schools before you do, some schools will say they can't afford to give away the extra place.

I’m planning on getting a tutor (once a week-ish) so I guess that will help but due to lockdown, I missed out on a lot of gcse topics and my teacher said they will not teach anymore and just test us on what we learnt so idk is the independent school type will work. But then again, I’m not sure how much different the teaching will be at csg. Someone who did bio/chem at Woodhouse said they were not helpful and were not allowed to get help when they asked because the teachers didn’t like it when they asked for help :frown:

There's definitely more people than just your subject teacher who you can ask for help. You can literally ask other teachers from the department, they won't mind because it's literally their job. There's also head of dep. and learning support. Sometimes if you do badly, this 'help' is compulsory, it's called an academic contract or something where they monitor your grades and help you improve it. Also you could probably get help from your friends before you need any teachers involved. Frankly, I think you'd be fine in Woodhouse if your GCSE grades are that good. But good luck finding what college to go to!

I’m worried I won’t make any close friends in Woodhouse lol. But it’s nice that there is a contract and that I can ask for other teachers to help. Thanks again for the response:smile:
