I'm so bad at them, please could someone help me with the following

3CuS + HNO3--> CuSO4 + NO + H2O

If you have 3CuS on one side then the CuSO4 needs a 3 in front of it too
Then look at the hydrogen
Then the nitrogen and oxygen

Yeah, as Laura said, you have 3 in front of Cu, that’s the only way you will balance it on the RHS by putting a 3 in front of CuSO4 then go from there trying to balance the N’s and the O’s

That is a hard one to do by trial and error and so i would use the oxidation number method:

Oxidation number of copper doesn't change-it is +2 in CuS and CuSO4

The oxidation number of sulphur goes from -2 in CuS to +6 in the SO42- ion in CuSO4..that is a change of 8 (8electrons lost)

ON of N in HNO3 is +5 and is+2 in NO so that is a decrease of 3 (3 electrons gained)

To balance the number of electrons you need 3 x CuS ( 24 electrons lost)and 8 x HNO3 (24 electrons gained)..

When yu have done that just balance the H's to get the right number of H2O's on the right.

im struggling to balance the hydrogens and nitrogens, I can't seem to get to the correct answer xx
