Losing a close guy friend just like that?!?!

so this guy and I were super close and he ghosted me out of nowhere? I made sure that I had done nothing to upset him. we used to occasionally flirt and he used to hint about us being a thing but I always brushed him off or jokingly flirted back. But right after my birthday party, he attended just ghosted me completely. I tried contacting him but no response. we had been really good friends over a year and it makes me so sad and confused and I keep blaming myself

Was he really a friend?
It sounds like he was only looking for a relationship or to hookup with you.
Once he realised that you didn't want to do either and he wouldn't be able to change your mind, he moved on.
