Very off topic but need some advice regarding life at LSE as I currently hold an offer for accounting and finance. Firstly whats the general social life like and the mood amongst students. Secondly where would you suggest is the best accomadation, in terms of social activities. Lastly I also have an offer from Warwick which I am considering along side LSE, any key pros and cons for each would be great. I know im asking alot but any help would be appriciated as I do not want to make the wrong decision. Thanks in advance for any responses.

yes. lse is the worlds ******** institution. they cannot provide me with a computer that works and saves my work. i thought it was. it was doing the saved stuff.

the computer crashes, i go to use another one and what do you know?! all my contract law essay is GONE apart from the introduction and the lot of my public law class prep has gone. nothing. nada. sweet FA. im so flipping annoyed right now and can barely keep my eyes open to redo it all.

seriously on the verge of tears right now.

and on a lighter note, which needs to be said, the question on the political affiliation of sephs hat was hilarious. he has to go.

no confidence is so happening.

Do you have a computer in your halls? Plus if you want to do anything on an LSE computer always save it on a memory stick first. You should only save stuff on the LSE computer as a backup as like you said they do tend to break down a lot
My laptop broke yesterday and I think I also may have lost an essay and **** load of lecture notes. The depressing thing was I was in the process of backing it up on a data stick when it crashed. :frown:

If your asking about social life then LSE>>>>>>Warwick

Can you go into abit more detail please.
The Sherminator
You want to know something **** about LSE? Supreme interest in careers over academics, and sole desire to join IB which pushes practically everyone to do the same for fear of being left behind. Needless stress in life.

Lol

Reading this thread has definitely scared me. is social life really that bad? i am not really into clubbing so is there no social life if u dont club? would really rather have meals with frds and go watch a movie etc.

I was really looking forward to come to LSE though... =(

trust me this is miscontrued. At LSE their are some people who would rather keep them selfs to themselfs and thats perfectly fine. If you are living in halls finding friends will not be hard, just apply to the big halls such as Rosebury and Bankside. I sorta have two sets of friends, one set which I go clubbing with around 3-4 times a week, and another who dont enjoy clubing so we do other things like ice skating, cinema, meals... There are plenty of people who will want to go out and you will consistently be meeting new people who you can go out with.

me also, i am an offer holder and all the bad press about socialising is really putting me off, although a student assured me the night life is what you make it...

also do you find the ethnic groups stick to themselves a lot? i'm pretty outgoing and i didn't think i'd have a problem making friends until this thread....

if you put yourself out there/be normal with people youll make friends.

those that have complained seem to be the type that have locked themselves away and not made the effort.

seriously, im crap at making friends and ive managed fine. there's a night out on each day of the week, and people will go... join societies, join clubs, and youre guaranteed to find friends.

A lot of people are very nerdy, it's true, but you'll also find people who are outgoing and very social- just don't look for them in your lectures' front rows.

It's what you make of it at LSE. The two things which I hate about the place are 1) the buildings themselves and 2) teaching.
A bit of nerdiness at the place does actually motivate me

You expect a bit of "nerdiness" though, its apparently a great uni so you are going to find hard working people there. I say apparently, because the teaching is so bad I don't know how its ranked so highly lol....

On the subject of teaching (know this is a random place to ask but hey), how important is it to pay attention in classes or lectures? What I'm getting at is, is there enough material to teach yourself a lot of the course?

it's uber important to go to econs lecture because Prof Young teaches a lot of things that's off textbook, but everything else is okay. everyone falls asleep in stats and maths but those 2 subjects seem to be the one everyone can catch up easily on. material wise all the lecture slides are online, but the second half of stats material is incomprehensible junk and the textbooks are rubbish so you might want to get another textbook.

class wise, it depends. some teachers happen to teach a lot more than required and that's really helpful, otherwise others just stick to giving you solutions etc which really doesn't require much more than understanding lectures.

also, i have never worked so hard in my life before coming to LSE. everyone's such a geek that it actually scares me to working. wtf peer pressure.
El Mariachi
Cool cool, thanks for that. I was planning on attending all of them, just I'm quite impatient and have an attention span of like 10 minutes, so usually just note everything said in the class and try and work through it myself later.

LOL @ peer pressuring you into working hard!

If you're motivated you could get away with paying very little attention in lectures and stuff. At least for my subjects, which are almost entirely essay based, the work is largely down to my own efforts rather than the university's.
Economics is one subject do all the work for. Lectures/classes/homeworks/readings... do the whole lot. The rest, do as you feel comfortable, its tough obviously but manageable, whereas Economics, I don't know what pleasure he gets from making the course so god damn difficult.

Alwyn changed the macro syllabus last year and shifted focus from traditional IS-LM to a more dynamic model. Solow model's done in first year now, previously it was one of the last topics in LT for 2nd year EC201
