I hated every minute of my LSE career. And it was sad, because I could hardly contain my excitement as I rocked up in the big city aged 18, ready to see the world and meet fabulous people and have ironical experiences... And I really tried to turn the situation around by doing the right things - joining societies and doing some volunteering but there is no getting around it - the LSE culture is aloof, unfriendly and snobbish. I will never forget the sneering look on my flatmate's face the night she reduced me to tears by pronouncing that I was only there to 'tick boxes' because I'm northern, working class and state-educated. So in the end, I cut my losses and pretty much became an honourary UCL student. I'd go to LSE lectures but socialise with UCL students, and also a few from KCL and QMUL. The change in the people was staggering. I remember the first time a friend took me to the UCL union. Strangers were just coming over to say hello and introduce themselves, to ask for a dance, ask if they could buy me another pina colada (do they still sell those?!) - I knew right then that I had been very foolish to turn down UCL in favour of LSE. Still. You should totally do the same thing. Next time the chill of Holborn gets too much, head up to Bloomsbury for fun and frolics and the proper student life. Nobody warned me that to go to LSE is to choose between the great degree OR a fun time. I'd shake my kids if they told me they wanted to go there. I should probably never tell them how much I hated it, juuuust in case I spawn some rebellious 'Maebe' type who would go there to irk me!

Some of the things you said I have to agree with. 1 or 2 people seem to talk to me at the start of the year now they just snob me. I went to one of the KCL halls to meet my friend and the atmospher was so different. People were happy to have me around would talk to me and felt welcomed.

I have even joined one or two societies but after going to or 2 of the meetings most people seem to have thier own groups so I don't bother going anymore. I do have a few people I talk to from classes however I don't really have anyone I can really call my friend. I think it the reason why I feel this way is because of where I am staying. I knew it was gonna be quite but not this bad.

Now I just keep myself busy and that helps a lot. Just gonna stick it out and knowing that time goes quickly, I know my 3 years here will be over before I know it

I totally know what you mean christeen,
in the second year and although i have managed to accept that LSE really is just an instituition that people go to for the name. nothing more. yeah sure "its what you make of it" etc but its not that easy. i somewhat envy my friends who claim they are having the time of their life at LSE. I got so much work to do i barely have time to see my close friends. we usually have to "book" things a week in advance, as opposed to just calling each other up to hang out.

which halls you at? how are you finding things??

hardly true if someone has to study 5-6 hours per day (best hypothesis) ... or maybe they are in the first year

No offence, but that is a pretty pathetic thing to say. Go out and make some friends! I am in the same halls as you, and knew nobody when I arrived here, just like you, and I'm 4 hours from home, just like you. But I'm having a great time! What's the difference??

Isn't your Social Policy group quite close knit?? Surely you will have made some close friends in that group at least...?

Hell, im having a ******* awsome time at the moment, i've met some people who I know are going to be my friends for life, we go out alot, or stay in and watch movies, have fun, chill out infront of the TV. I dont get what all this fuss is about tbh, if you want to get drunk every night just get a bottle of whiskey and sit in your room. Otherwise get out there and do stuff, if people dont automaticly get up and talk to you then why dont you get up and talk to people? Hell life here really isnt that bad, theres a tonne of free stuff to do (I went to see Top Gear and Mock the Week, I went around Covent Garden watching the acts, been going to free cinema events, cheap tickets at the BFI and so much more)...you just got to make it for yourself, dont expect to be spoon fed seriously. This is such a great oppertunity and you are wasting it by moping about feeling sorry for yourselves...
@acore r u spanish?

I won't be complaining if I haven't. What do you do when you try to make friends with people who don't want to hang out with you as they already have thier own group? And no social policy department is not close knitted

LSE is probably the most boring place i have ever been to. i mean i purely go there for schooling then leave. there isnt much to do. once you move into second year you all lead your own lives. spare time is spent sleeping or doing internship applications.

The life of an LSE student:
Study, investment banking internships, go to the library to do more work. go home and do work. and meet up with friends.

luckily i have a set of friends who i made whilst in halls who are really nice. but its hard to meet new people i find, purely because once people have their own group you are pretty much going to keep them until you leave.

i would say that at LSE, the avg. person has 5 really good friends whom you make an active effort with..

but that my 2cents :P

I whole heartedly agree

Ah I've been having doubts whether I made the right choice applying to LSE now :|
Whilst I'm not expecting to go out and get drunk everynight, I'd still like to be able to have a decent social life and meet new people who I'd be able to make friends etc...

Was wondering, are you all living in LSE halls? If i was to get into LSE (which is highly unlikely), I'd probably go for one of the intercollegiate halls, do people who live there find themselves making more friends and with a better social life than those who are in LSE halls?

don't be worried by this. You can still have a great social life at LSE. I have friends and relatives at LSE who abolutely LOVE it! Remember its more likely that people will complain on message boards than come on and say they love it. The general views of this thread are not the general views of the whole student body at LSE.

Very good point.
I dont get all this fuss. I am in Bankside and find there is way too much to do. You can go out every night to a lot of different venues with a lot of different people. Plus, I have met a few cool people from other halls, so we can meet up and have a good time...

Saying that, I am doing no work and lagging behind now. But really, the problem for me seems to be that there are too many people, and not enough time.

LSE is full of wierdos.

 bit random. Why do you say that
... cos it is?
what is a WIERDO:confused:
I can understand your concern with not being in a group, as it happens I had a university unrelated ****** time the first few weeks so didn't concentrate on making friends, but nobody is cold hearted, barge into their social groups and actually introduce yourself as "hey I always see you guys around and never get to talk to you and actually I haven't made that many friends in the department so I was wondering if you could introduce me to some people". If you're at the point of feeling sorry for yourself then at least let other people feel sorry for you too and then they will include you :yep:
I like LSE, met some great people, but I hope I don't offend anybody but there are some well boring people here. I sometimes wish I'd gone to a "lower" university - is that bad?

Anyway, I hope I meet some more people soon!
