Welcome to the NatSci offer holders thread

I’m making this thread so we can discuss things like our accommodation and module choices but if you’re still undecided about which university you would like to choose for Natural Sciences I’m happy to discuss why I’ve chosen Southampton to be my first choice. I’ve made this thread so we don’t annoy people on the official Natural Sciences thread as there’s only 2/3 of us hoping to go to Southampton!

A little about me

Where else did I apply to go to for NatSci?

UEA (which is my insurance), Bath and Loughborough

What accommodation am I interested in?

En-suites in glen eyre and Wessex lane

What are my main interests?

I love chemistry especially organic, I’m planning on doing inorganic chemistry modules too although I haven’t covered inorganic chemistry in year 2 A-level chemistry yet. I’m also interested in biotechnology so I’m really looking forward the synthetic biology core module and will probably do some biology modules (physiology, cell biology or biochemistry probably). I also am interested in sustainable development so might take a environmental science module if there is one on sustainability or something similar and I have a spare option.

Hi! I keep changing my mind about Southampton or bath haha. I really like the sound of the Southampton course, but I’ve never been to Southampton so I feel like I don’t know why I would want to go there as a place. I think Bath is a really nice place and the perfect size but the course has less variety. I’ve also been thinking about whether the Bath course might be beneficial for having more structure because it kind of leads you down a set path (you end up specialising in one of the sciences). What made you end up choosing Southampton as your firm? Also what A-Levels are you doing? I think in terms of modules I’ll probably focus on biology and some environmental science, but I’m also quite interested in the technology side of things as well so would be interested to learn about that.

For accommodation at Southampton I think I would like to be in Mayflower, my sister is there now and she really likes being in the city centre

I had a difficult time deciding between Bath and UEA for my insurance choice but Southampton was an obvious firm choice for me.

I like that the course has the core modules that all the NatSci students do together, the topics seem really interesting and it will be great to get to look into so many interesting areas of STEM. I did worry that some are a little out of my comfort zone but that just means I’ll get to study things I would never at different universities. I’m planning on doing mainly chemistry modules so even though you can do anything and the course doesn’t have a set joint honours structure like bath you can give the course structure and pick a specialism for yourself. I don’t know if you’ve seen module selection video but it helped me get over my worries about the lack of structure - it basically says you pick what 4 options you want to do in 3rd year then work backwards making sure you do the the year 2 modules which are required prerequisites for year 3 modules and the year 1 modules required to do the year 2 modules. It might help your decision making to plan out a possible selection of modules if you haven’t already.

I’ve also visited Southampton a few times when going to IKEA and I went to the university on an open day when my brother was looking at universities (never seen the science side though as he was interested in history). I like that it isn’t a big city but still has everything you could ever need. As I live in the countryside I think it’s going to be a bit of a shock to the system living in a city but it seems like a nice place. Personally, Bath seemed a little bit of a dull city and I didn’t think it was a place I’d like to live in my second and third years.

I do Biology, Chemistry and Maths A-levels, what about you?

Oh that’s interesting about how you pick your modules actually, I’ll have a look for that video thank you! I think I’m going to try and visit Southampton at some point, my sister is in first year there so hopefully I should be able to have a look around and see what it’s like
I’m also doing biology chemistry geography and art a levels

I’m planning on looking around Southampton tomorrow, just to see where the accommodation is and see what the journey is like and stuff. What’s your sister studying?

She’s doing English and history, so obviously can’t give much advice on the science stuff!

Just double checking in case you know - for the Southampton course, you can take different modules to the ones listed on the Natural Science page on the website can't you? Or is it just the ones they've shown

I think you can take different modules from the ones listed I think they’re just suggestions. As far as I’m aware they only reduced the module options available for the 2020 intake, I think we can do any science modules but might be worth emailing the course director if it’ll affect your decision.

I wanna do mainly chemistry with some biology and environmental science. I’m applying for glen eyre as my first choice and then Wessex lane for my other choices.

Hi it’s been a while, how is everyone?? How are we feeling about results day, less than 3 weeks to go now

Having looked at the options we were sent this week I’m thinking of going for the option with cell biology, biochemistry and organic chemistry. What are you guys looking at?

I’m feeling confident that I should get in but just in case I don’t I’ve switched my insurance choice to Loughborough so that should I definitely get onto a Natural Sciences degree this year if I get don’t get the results for Southampton.
