Attaining a TC in a human rights/civil liberties firm

I’m currently a first year undergraduate studying the llb. I am interested in finding out more about civil liberties/human rights as a practice. The route to qualifying as a solicitor in this practice seems less conventional than commercial, for instance many seem to already have experience as a paralegal before commencing a training contract. I was wondering if anyone could give me any further insight or advice for someone interested in attaining a TC and becoming a solicitor specialising in these practices. Thanks!
It's not really a common specialism so your best chance is to gain a TC in a 'feeder' area and then specialise into human rights as you build up your portfolio. For this you will be wanting firms that deal with immigration and criminal law - mostly dealing with work which involves public bodies. By doing this you can take on cases with potential human rights issues alongside a normal workload and continue to qualify and earn while trying to achieve the role you actually want - especially considering the LLB has a 5year expiry.

For work experience there will likely be a charity that completes pro-bono immigration/asylum work in your city. Also check out Amicus for an internship, it's not a TC but it may offer opportunities in a career direction you haven't yet considered.

Thank you! That’s really helpful.
