It probably depends which era of the Romans you look at im not sure you can blanket the Romans they went from a Royalist system to a republic to an Empire.

Certainly in the days of the republic military success was key to climbing the Roman political system, although the senate was like 900 people, they couldn't all be commanders like Ceasar and Pompey.

But when Rome was at its peak in terms of land mass it was an Empire and I think a lot varied on who was the Emperor, some were deeply at the forefront of managing political life and others were less interested and this created different opportunities.

OK thank you this is helpful.
However more specifically are there any key events or individuals that I should include in the essay?

I believe that era was the end of the Roman republic. It was around this time Rome entered civil war, Ceaser V Pompey.

You presumably are familiar with the makeup of the Roman senate and the role of praetors/consuls etc. and the inherent military links.

I'll leave you to research what you wish to include in your essay.

Please don't make duplicate threads - better to bump the one that's already there.

I'll merge this with your first thread in the History forum.
