What do you think 9 - 16 + 4 is equal to?

(Separate question but may help with or show your confusion)

At first I was thinking adding before subtracting but then I realised it was meant to be dividing before multiplying instead

But yeah it makes sense now

Great. I thought there was a possibility that you thought BIDMAS means you do addition before subtraction which is a common confusion.

That isn't the rule here. The fact that there are 2 multiplications and 1 division is a consequence of the 2 additions and 1 subtraction in the original expression.

Not entirely convinced that the confusion hasn't just moved from 'A before S' to 'D before M' - see my above comment
