Commute or Stay at Home??? ASAP

Hello,

I am moving into my third and final year at university this September studying Computer Science. I have stayed on campus in my first and second year but would prefer to stay home in my final year.

I have discussed with a current final year that we have 6 hours of physical lectures a week (compared to the current 9). I live an hour (via train / car) away from the university. Is it worth finding accommodation or to stay at home and commute via car??

Thank you

It depends on how intense your course is! I live in the library so commuting is not really an option, but you could do public transport and revise or work on the train, it helps if you lectures are clumped so you aren't travelling most days.
I get really distracted at home though and feel isolate, but plenty of people find uni friends distracting and actually have friends at home so don't feel isolated.

It just depends on you and your course really!

Hi @ThePGT,

I would take into consideration how useful you found working in your library and having easy access to resources. It would be difficult for you if you find it hard to work form home unless you have an alternative local library.

Additionally, your 6 hours a week could be very spread out. If they are at 9 am you would have to leave very early to arrive on time which could be a long day if you have another lecture later on that day and then having to commute back. It would certainly be more convenient for you to leave near campus but it will ultimately come down to if you reasons for wanting to stay home outweigh the inconvenience of commuting to university.

As a Computer Science student you'll presumably be doing a final year project. If that requires access to specialist facilities on site, bear in mind that you'll be spending more than just lecture time on campus.

If you're planning to drive in, make sure you also allow for things like where you're going to park your car and how long it will take to get from there to your lectures.

Hello!

It's a great idea to speak to a current final year student, especially one who is on your course so can relate to you better than anyone else!

I think you need to go with your gut. I know it's a hard choice to make but you know deep down what will be best for you. However, it's a good idea to speak to final year students on your course and your personal tutor as they can let you know if next year for your final year project whether you will need to use facilities that are on site and whether it would be at your advantage if you lived on campus again. Another thing to keep in mind is if you have an early seminar or lecture at 9am and the travel time to get onto campus.

Balance out your thoughts with a pros and cons list so you can see the drawbacks of both staying or moving back home.
