Some ideas you could discuss or think about, I would split between physical / environmental factors and socio-economic factors.
- Location of the country, cyclones / hurricanes / typhoons occur in the tropics, especially in the Caribbean and South-East Asia. Hurricane season and the position that hurricanes rotate - in an anticlockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere.
- Population density or location of major population settlements and the surrounding land topography - are the urban centres located on land that is below sea level or on the coastline?
- How prepared is the population? Bring in ideas about population preparedness, establishment of evacuation routes, temporary accommodation, sanitation and potable water supplies. Resilience of the population.
- And most importantly would be ideas about the level of socio-economic development of the country. Does the government have the capital to invest in weather warning systems and funding insurance and evacuation, or are the country reliant on international aid donations, philanthropy and NGO action?
