latin help?

i have finished this paper but can't for the life of me figure out why "esset" is subjunctive in the phrase "subito intellexit quam pulcher esset Minos". any help?

Me too, I’m so confused, I think that it is possible an indirect question, but normally they go something like, “He asked me what I was doing” me rogavit quid faciam.

Yeah I agree, I think it's probably an indirect question. Because after any verb of understanding or questioning ('intellexit') followed by an interrogative ('quam' in this case), this usually triggers an indirect question I think??

It's an indirect question, quam meaning 'how' and the direct question being 'how beautiful is/was Minos?'.
