Dickens shows the suffering of the poor by demonstration of absence. For example, nowhere is there any mention of Bob Cratchit having an iPhone or even any form of access to social media of the time. This accentuates the suffering of the poor in silence, unable even to garner a single “like”. The Christmas dinner scene of the Cratchit family makes no mention of exotic foods like guacamole or sushi which would have been well within the reach of even middle income families. Even if doesn’t like guacamole or sushi, this can be taken as demonstration that the poor didn’t even have the choice to like or dislike, once again emphasising Dickens’ power of observation.
