Cupcake delighted for u too i remeber u and daisy boo and me earlier in year all in the same boat waiting delighted for u ive still no word do u mind if i ask ur interview score wonder should i ring them??

Access09, awk I'm sorry that you haven't heard anything yet, when I got a call it was very unexpected. I got a score of 19 and in the 70s for the access course result, so they are at the 19s when places become available (I got into the adult branch and that was my only choice on the app) You should go ahead and ring but if a call comes, it will be when you least expect it. Best of luck!!!:crossedf:

Hey Access09

Ring them what have you got to loose. I got a score of 19 and i rang them, they said that they are offering poeple places with the score of 19, so you might be in luck if you got that score.

Let me know what they say to you.

Thanks

i rang i got 18 in interview and 75% in access they sayd there is 13 with score of 18 but still a chance just more waiting
Access09, I really hope you get a place, my fingers are crossed for you. I know what it felt like and how frustrating it was not knowing. I had my occupational health appointment today so I'm a little on edge, they have requested a letter from my g.p so I hope everything will be fine. Can't imagine gaining a place and then losing it 2 weeks later! :s-smilie:

This might be of interest to those applying this year...it's a timeline I found (not old, was dated for 2010) although 2011/12 apps as far as I know, there is no feb intake but other than that, the process stays roughly the same-

A time-line depicting the application process for the
BSc (Hons)/Diploma Nursing Sciences Course

In September October each year the application forms and guidance notes are
updated to reflect required changes.
In September each year the final draft of the proposed academic entrance criteria
is made for entry in February and September of the following academic year.
In October each year the advertisement is updated to reflect requirements and
signed-off as regards content and graphics.
Around 2nd week in November the advertisement is placed in the Belfast
Telegraph and on the School’s webpage (for downloading).
The closing date is normally the UCAS date in January for the BSc (Hons)
/Diploma in Nursing Sciences course, the 7th January 4pm
Nearing the closing date, the short-listing criteria are set and rigidly applied.
In February, Clinical and Teaching staff receive interview training, and an agreed
interview programme is set. Normally 2 3 training events are held.
Rejection and interview offer letters are reviewed around the end of January.
The short-listing process commences following the closing date. Interview
invitations and rejection letters are posted at exactly the same time. Applicants
being offered an interview receive written notification of the date and time of their
interview around the beginning of February.
An interview grid is designed and the names of interviewers are placed in the
time slots. Where possible, branch specific QUB interviewers interview with
branch specific clinicians.
Interviews are normally conducted in the 4 weeks preceding Easter and any
deferred interviews are held in the week following Easter.
Conditional offer letters are updated for use in April.
The DHSS&PS sets its numbers for the 2 intakes and branch specific/intake
specific conditional offers are made. Applicants are asked about their 2nd choice
and the reserve list at this stage. A reserve list is maintained for each branch with
an agreed cut-off interview score for each branch, normally in March each year.
In April/May, applicants with the required academic qualifications and applicants
awaiting results are given Occupational Health assessment appointments and
Access NI criminal records checks are requested.
Criminal Records/Health/Disability issues are dealt with as they arise.
Access course results are available from late June onwards but no offers are
made until the 3rd week in August.
GCSE, A Level and other results are available from the 2nd week in August and
students are required to confirm their results in the 3rd week of August by visiting
the Registry Office with the necessary documentation. Those who fail to reach
the required results have their names removed from the lists and the next person
on the reserve list who achieves the required grades is made an offer.
Remaining applicants requiring Access NI criminal records checks have them
made at this stage.
Students commence the course around the 2nd/3rd week of September providing
they meet the conditions of offer.
Mental Health and Children’s students on the waiting list who have indicated a
willingness to be considered for another branch are placed on that waiting list.
In December of each year, the February numbers are reviewed and applicants
are asked to restate their interest. Where possible, places for February are filled
from the reserve list including those students who expressed a desire to accept
their 2nd choice.
Hi cupcakes i never got a letter to go to occupational health how long ago did you get it? Did you hear any other correspondance since you got you place?
I got called for it around the 10th Nov. I don't think everyone gets called for a health check. It refers to the green sheet you filled in during the application process, so people get called if they have a certain medical condition, medications etc and sometimes they will request a letter from the G.P.
So if you haven't been called for one, no worries...your actually lucky lol

So far that's all I have received, I was told on the phone that I would hear more in the early new year. Just christmas to look forward to for now
(edited 13 years ago)
Thanks cupcakes was just a little worried there in case the letter got lost in post or something. Yea i was told same. time to enjoy xmas then the new year brings new things

Hi Michelle
I was out of ed for 5 years, and contacted my personal tutor, who was happy to give me a reference. So I would advise you to contact your school/college/uni and they should be happy to give you a reference!
I got a place for nursing so queens had no problem with a 5 year old reference.
Good luck.

Hi there, haven't been on in ages. Just a quick update with everyone......We have just finished our first 6 week placement and are off until January. I cant believe how quickly our time in placement has gone and I was very lucky to be placed on a very friendly but quite intense ward. I now know that after this first placement that Nursing is definately the career for me. I was so nervous about this placement but am so looking forward to my next placement in Feb which is already up online. Bye for now...

That's fantastic that your placements all went really well! enjoy the break! i'm starting in Feburary so starting to get a bit nervous about it all! Can I ask what sort of hours you do on placement? also do you have many assignments to do on placement or is more to do with building up your portfolio, learning logs, etc.?

Hey rosie, no assignment during this placement but im sure there will be in future placements. We had some writing to do in our clinical portfolio but not very much. Placement is 37.5 hrs week, i did Friday - Tuesday every week, my shifts were two 7:45-4:45 and two 1-9 and one half day 7:45 - 1:45. All places are different so it will depend on where you are placed. Iv 3 kids so it was hard not having any weekends off but i really loved it and im sure you'll love it too when u get out there, the 1st six weeks at Queens flies in so you'll be out on placement before you know it. Best of luck for Feb.

Hi Rosie

My hours varied from week to week. Some days were 745am to 9pm - very long!! Took a bit of getting used to those hours! Others were shorter 745 to 2pm or 745 to 6pm or 2pm to 9pm, and i had 2 night shifts - 830pm to 730am.

It's like trisha said though - it really does vary from place to place. And yes, we were very lucky not to have assignments during this placement. I did a bit of reading around the various illnesses on the ward too.

You must be getting really excited about starting - have you got uniform fitting dates yet?

Thanks for the info re placements - that's really good to know! i was considering looking for part-time work but it looks like it would be difficult to find a job that would be flexible enough to fit in with placement. Getting excited now that I've heard what it's likely to entail. I'm 28 and leaving a full time permanent job so definitely a bit nervous aswell!

Hi Kat33 - haven't heard about uniform fitting yet. Got a letter this week giving registration date for 8th Feb and it also said that we would get a letter towards end of January so I assume we'll hear about uniform fitting then. one last question what does the first week entail? It it more of an induction week rather than classes, etc? Trying to work out when my last day of work will be!

Rosie,

As far as I remember, the first week does include some classes and lots of important info, so i'd say it's definitely important to attend, i'm pretty sure class registers had to be signed during the first week too.

I'd just finished full time work too, when i started nursing, in fact i only got my place less than 2 weeks before the start of the course - my manager was really understanding about the short notice, thankfully!

Thanks Kat33 I definitely be attending the first week - don't want to miss anything! I'm just deciding now whether to work right up to the start date or give myself a bit of a break beforehand!
