people dropped out for various reasons like personal or family problems but alot failed all 3 exams at xmas and werent allowed back and sum people just struggled with placements and the overall workload with coursework and studying for exams etc. said that lecturers are very sore on first years and in a way put pressure on maybe try to weed out people who cant hack it and arent guna last the 3 years and do well. he said 1 girl for example on 1st day of placement in antrim was asked to toilet a patient and she said she wasnt there for that and she left and never came back....

Not there for that! what the hell did she think a nurse did? Im not saying the basics isnt going to be nice but I do know it is going to be part of it. Our tutor told us the same about some student nurses, that they think they are going to be mini doctors then get a shock during placements when they are asked to do basics.

I think it's obvious some people just aren't cut out for nursing, either that or they were very naive about a nurses role! My friend (at end of her second yr) is on placement at present in the ulster hospital on plastic surgery ward, and although she loves it she emphasized that during the 3 yrs as a student you're basically a glorified auxillary nurse! she spends a lot of time toileting patients and helping with feeding, she actually got vomited on by the first patient she ever saw on her first placement in 1st yr! lol Talk about being thrown in at the deep end! lol I have no problems whatsoever with getting my hands dirty though, I would never (even when we qualify) ask someone to do something I wouldn't do myself. I'm looking forward to it all to be honest...even the gross bits!:p: lol xxx

I have been wiping rear ends for years with my job and I expect to wipe 100's more while im training.....:smile:
hey all... hows you's getting on!?

there are high numbers who drop out, it is a big commitment, finacially, emotionally... it is time consuming, stressful, and everybody is reduced to tears at least once. you will meet horrible lecturers, personal tutors, mentors and nurses... some ward sisters will tell you that you are unimportant, and mentors will act as if you are an inconvience... and you have to suck it all up, because they decide whether or not you pass! some people cannot hack it...
also, yes for some it is a shock when they are expected to toilet a patient, when they are asked to shower a patient... especially if they have never been on a ward.

occ health, first week you will get an appointement time to go get a shot... you will get 3 throughout the year, and a blood test at the end... what i found most interesting was, the appointment was the first time i met my class.. they are all there the same time... and there be's a lot of sitting around

i had to go to school records and get proof of my immunisations... you will be asked to if it is needed, some they will do the prick test to see if you have immunity... ? like in school?
the injections are important, if they have no record of you attending your appointments you will not be allowed on placement!!

good day to you all

Hey guys!
Gosh it's been ages since I've been in here and this thread was practically my bible back in the day! Just thought I'd give a wee quick update!

So I started in February, first phase was great I really loved it and I met so many people I would now count as my best friends. In fact I moved in with one of the girls from my class in June so seriously if any of you are worried about making friends don't be I've found that the majority of people who do nursing are lovely and you will make some great friends!

Placement was really good. First week or so was nerve wracking as I'd never really worked in that type of role before. Only advice I would give is roll your sleeves up and get stuck in! I'd heard stories of students refusing to do things and basically sitting around all day but there's no way you'd get any experience doing that. You mentor and the people you're working with would far rather you just got on with it even if you're unsure what you're doing because it shows you are willing to learn.

Just finished second phase and one word-biomed! I'm sure some of you love science but for those who aren't it is tough going! Not much to do but revise it. This phase really stressed me out but I passed the wee online exam so all is well.

For all of you people about to start I'm sure you'll love it. It is tough going but there is never a day I regret doing it! If you have any questions or anything let me know, especially if you're doing LD nursing cos that's what i'm doing.

Hi Everyone
Just wondering does anyone on here know what to do with results if you are a graduate? I graduated back in 2004 and not sure if I need to bring my results to registry office? (even though I would have provided copies of them at interview?)
Thanks everyone for all the hints and tips that are on here - it really is useful!!!

Hi Rosie_m1 I graduated in 04 too, I brought all my certs the day of the interview. On my letter offering me a place it is pending police check and occ health, doesnt say anything about verifying results. It will tell you on your letter what you have to do, think you will prob be the same as me.

Thanks Alig - my letter says that I must have achieved these results by 31st August. Think I'll phone them just in case!!!

Hey Rosie_m1
I graduated in 2005 and brought my certificate on day of interview. When i got my letter telling me i was on the reserve list, i also got the letter telling me to verify my results, although it did say only if you haven't already done so. However, a few weeks later i got a letter saying that i don't need to verify my results in august as i have already done so.
My advice would be to give them a quick call to be on the safe side.
Have you got a full offer, for which branch?
