Sheffield or York?

Has anyone applied for MSc in Advanced Computer Science at the University of York or Sheffield? I got a conditional offer letter from both universities, need some insights on choosing the right option, can anyone help?

Hi there,

Congratulations on your offers, they are both great choices! I am a recent University of York graduate (not Computer Science I'm afraid), but if you have any questions about the city of York, the campus, accommodation or student life just let me know!

The University of York has a postgraduate online open day on 9th June which may give you some insight into what it's like to study at York.

I'd also recommend checking out our student blogs written by current Computer Science students. They talk about things to look forward to at York and 'A Day in the Life' style content.

I hope this helps!

Hi!

Congratulations on your offers! Unfortunately I don't know anything about the Master in Computer science but I am originally from York before I moved to Sheffield for University. If you have any questions/comparisons you would like to know about either city I am more than happy to help. I personally love both cities a lot, York being my hometown I really like being there it's small and a beautiful city. However, I do find Sheffield to be better as a student just as there is a lot more to do especially in terms of nightlife!

Hope this helps a bit, if you have any questions please feel free to ask !

Hello Alisha, thankyou for replying back.

I want to know which city is better to be lived in especially for a non-eu student, who is less cost effective in terms of living, food and transportation.

Hello!

I love living in both cities, but they are both very different in my opinion. York is a smaller city and I would say is more expensive in terms of socialising (nights out, transport etc). The Uni of York campus is situated away from the main city centre, they do have a regular bus that runs from there to the main city centre and I believe this is only £1. Although I don't know the times this bus runs till and taxis are quite expensive in York. Sheffield I would say is a cheaper city in general, I definitely spend less money on a night out in Sheffield. It's closer to walk to the city from the accommodation in Sheffield and there is also a bus that runs from the centre to accommodation also for £1. I generally find taxis to be a bit cheaper in Sheffield as you can get Ubers which are harder to get in York. I would say both have similar costs in terms of living and food expenses, just depends where and what standard of living you want to go for and where you shop for food, for either city I recommend trying to go to a larger supermarket/shop to get food as this makes it much cheaper. Both cities have buses that will get you pretty close to a big shop from my memory, or you could walk dependent on what you prefer. Sheffield has trams in the city which are a really good method of transport as it takes you all over the city!

Honestly think you have a hard decision here, I love both cities a lot after living in York most of my life and then being student in Sheffield, I enjoy being in both cities so don't think there is one 'right' choice just depends on preference. I would say Sheffield is generally cheaper for me than being in York as a student and I feel I have more to do in Sheffield in terms of parks/green space and social activities/clubs.

Hope this helps you out, if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask

Thank you, Alisha. Well, I'm considering to go at the University of Sheffield for my master's. You mentioned some good points above while comparing them and that helps a lot.

Again thank you for your time and for replying.
