UCL vs QMULWatch
I like both courses (but I prefer Politics and Economics) and I like both universities (but I prefer UCL). Any advice?
Hiya, I have taken a lot of modules from the History and Politics of the Americas course, and I would emphasise that it is very History focused. There is political and economic history, but if you’re looking for a course that’s more focused on political and economic theory like the QMUL one, that’s probably the better bet. If you’re happy with a greater focus on History, though, the History and Politics of the Americas course is fantastic.
Thank you for this! Do you study HPA and if so how is it? I read on the website that after the first year you can chose to specialise in politics or history, is this necesssarily true?
I study History but as a lot of the HPA modules are based on History, I’ve done quite a few of them, including my dissertation. I have a few friends on the course and they seem to be really enjoying it. As far as the specialisation, I’m not exactly sure, but if you google ‘UCL Institute of Americas modules’, you should be able to find a list of the options by year, which should give you a good idea of what’s on offer. I also saw you asked below about respectability - it’s a very new degree (this year has the first graduating cohort) but this shouldn’t impact respectability. It’s still a degree from UCL which is a highly ranked and generally well-respected university! Hope this helps
