Fresh clashes have erupted between Palestinians and Israeli police outside the Old City of Jerusalem, extending some of the city’s worst unrest in years, as a former Israeli defence official warned of an atmosphere like a powder keg ready to explode at any time.

At least 80 people were injured, including a one-year-old, and 14 were taken to hospital, the Palestine Red Crescent said. Israeli police said at least one officer was hurt.

Tensions in Jerusalem have soared in recent days, ahead of an expected Israeli court ruling on Monday on whether authorities can evict dozens of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood and give their homes to Jewish settlers. Inflaming the situation, Israelis will mark Jerusalem Day on the same day, celebrating the anniversary of when troops captured the city in 1967, including its majority-Arab neighbourhoods.

Yes. The ethnic cleansing of innocent Palestinians by the Israeli occupied forces. What else is new?

The United States must speak out strongly against the violence by government-allied Israeli extremists in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and make clear that the evictions of Palestinian families must not go forward - Bernie Sanders.

The UK government is well aware that the forcible transfer of an occupied population constitutes a war crime under international law,” CAABU said in a statement issued to Arab News.

“The international community continues to condemn such violations, including Israel’s illegal annexation of occupied East Jerusalem, forcible transfer of Palestinian populations and settlement expansions, yet little or no action is ever taken.”

Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah, a district of East Jerusalem, have been fighting an Israeli court order — which CAABU calls “discriminatory” — that declared settler organizations the owner of numerous Palestinian homes, forcing the occupants out of their homes or into an arrangement that would see them pay rent to the settlers in exchange for the right to remain in place.

That is just awful. How are they even considering this? How can anyone try to justify this or deny that this is an ethnic cleansing?? Where do they go if they are evicted??

Anti Zionism and Anti Semitism two separate things. Not all Jewish people support Israel's illegal actions therefore it cannot be Anti Semitic

The events today are certainly bad and there was an overreaction perhaps to the anti-protest in the city.

That said Hamas firing rockets as a result was not acceptable and Israel were correct to respond (for one thing, the city is on the other side of the country).

That said, these things are to be expected and in many ways it's a shame that Israel will not simply instruct those people to leave.
