Root Nodules

I have been told that a topic in my exam is to do with root nodules, but I am unsure on some bits. Does anyone know how root nodules benefit the bacteria? I know that they convert nitrogen gas into soluble nitrate ions, but other than that I can not think of why it benefits the bacteria, because I have been told they are in a symbiotic relationship. Anyone know? Thank you :smile:
