Hi guys, I am an international student and I'm applying for Data Science MSc in the UK.
I applied for Aberystwyth and Swansea university and got accept in both of them.
Could please help me choose ? I know I have to decide for myself but just I need other points of view it might help.
I looked up Aberystwyth university in Computer Science ranking, and it's not even ranked ( aside from ThecompleteUniversityguide ranking )
Whereas Swansea is ranked 200 in TimeshigherEducation and 500 in QS, and it has pretty much the same ranking with Aberystwyth on ThecompleteUniversityGuide.
I'm kinda lost because, I don't wanna spend a lot of money and fail to get a job ( or even just an interview because the university ranking does have an impact on getting the interviews in the first step )
So Generally I think Swansea university is Better, But still I don't think that Aberystwyth is bad either. Could you please share any information if you know how things go for MSc Data Science ( or Computer Science in general ), for both Swansea and Aberystwyth universities ? Because I don't wanna struggle finding a job. Your help is much appreciated ! Thank you guys !

This is more for computer science in general, I applied for the BSc Computer Science at all units.

I got offers from both these universities as well for computer science. I ruled Swansea out quite early on due to the course not really studying exactly what I want, but did look into each module. The main universities I debated were Lancaster and Aberystwyth. I chose Aberystwyth in the end for many reasons.

Firstly, for the ranking both the CUG and The Sunday Times Good University Guide are great, but remember rankings are more for research than how the students actually feel; for that I suggest WhatUni.

I chose Aberystwyth as it was the better course and they seem to actually care about their students. I’m interested in more practical aspects of computer science, with the amount of optional modules Aberystwyth provides, this is easy to accommodate. I have been told by a former student that Swansea is a bit more math content and, from their module page, only study Java until third year. None of the actual government statistics show that either university has much lead in graduate prospects, but a government paper did say that for computer science more ‘specialist’ courses, not particular Unis, achieve better employment success. To find the actual numbers, please use https://discoveruni.gov.uk Aberystwyth is renowned for teaching quality and student experience, so that’s a great benefit. I was told by my family, all academics (lectures and university consultants), Swansea has more ‘red flags’ although my research didn’t find this, I assume as a student the ‘red flags’ are not apparent.

After you look more into the actual data, I suggest you decide what you want to do after university. The job you want after should effect what course you want to study. For next years course the Aberystwyth modules are found here: https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/modules/de...puter+Science/ and for Swansea are found here: https://www.swansea.ac.uk/undergradu...-science-g400/

I could give you more information but it’s really a self journey. You have chosen two excellent courses though, so either should be fine.

Just remember whatever course you choose teaches the stuff you want and would constantly interest you. According to the governments report on Computer Science graduates; "Course satisfaction changed with time as graduates tried to enter into employment. Most were happy at the time of their study, but further down the line graduates reassessed the value of their course as they found it had not always adequately prepared them for the working world. This was especially the case among those who had less understanding of computer science upon applying to university or conducted little or no research when selecting their provider and / or course." "Graduates in this study who studied more specialist courses tended to think that their course was relevant to computer science related jobs / employers." "In terms of technical skills, several graduates stated that after graduating they lacked knowledge and experience of different programming and coding languages."

Hi Webly12,

I have just finished my 3rd year here at Aberystwyth University and I have really enjoyed my time here. Aberystwyth is a great place to be a student, there is a great feel to the town and there is always plenty to do and see. The University has a very friendly and welcoming feel and has even been named Welsh University of the Year for 2020 in The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

The MSc Data sciences course here at Aberystwyth is designed to meet the needs both of students intending a career in research, and those who want to accelerate an industrial career and graduates from the department exceed the national subject area average for employability.

As previously mentioned on this thread looking at the modules offered at each university is a really good way of comparing the courses to see which may interest you more. This is something I did when comparing universities when I applied and helped me make my decision. It may also be worth looking at how each course is assessed, to compare which style of assessment may suit the way you work best. Rankings are useful to look at, but it is also important to think about how the course is suited to your interests and future career goals and the skills you will get from the course. Also looking to see if the courses are accredited may also be useful in comparing courses.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Rebecca 😊

I cannot comment on the actual subject but as places they are very different. Swansea is well over 10 times the size of Aber as a city and is far easier to get to. The Computer Science department at Swansea is in a brand new building on the new campus. The campus opened in 2015 and the Computational Foundry in 2018 I think.

The best thing you can do is to look into the courses and places and decide which suits you better.

I wouldnt take any notice of rankings. They are really meaningless and would help you feel happier.

Have a look at student videos as they might give you a feel for the cities and attend online open days where you can ask questions. You could also ring the universities if you have any queries.
