there are a ton of movies which depict English culture and history. For example, the film "Elizabeth" shows what life was like for her majesty Elizabeth I during the 16th century.

History? watch a lot about World War II, the separation of West and East Germany, post-war era, the fall of Berlin Wall and reunification of the German countries and you will know a lot about Germany's youngest history.
My recommendation - for people who are especially interest in the Stasi and life in East Germany - to you is:
