haha, thanks a lot....what can I say, timing has never been my strong suit

by best campus, I meant to live on....as I will be based in highfield.....I'm wondering if I should be in highfield halls, or glen eyre....depends which has more medics really....but I'm asssuming highfield?

Highfield'll only ever be 1 of your 5 choice - sadly there's no guarantee you'll get where you put first! I'm not even sure you can specify Highfield - I think you only get to apply for the general Small Halls category.
So there's a risk you'd end up in one of the others.

ohh right, thats debated, well what do you want out of your halls?

self catered, or catered?
ensuite or shared?
near a park?
walking distance from uni?

deffo catered (would die otherwise  )
not too bothered, but would prefer ensuite (haven;t number crunched yet)
not bothered
yes, I'd like to be nice and close

:frown:

so even if I apply now for the accommodation, and put small halls and glen eyre....I may not get either?

It wouldn't be guaranteed - I mean, you can put several different Glen choices down - the way it works is you pick from a drop down menu for campus, catered or not, type of room. It's not got anything to with when you apply provided you get it in before the deadline, sadly :frown:

So if you were really wanting to be on Glen you'd have to stick a few different options down! They say most people get their first two choices tho and everyone gets one of their first three.
(unless you're one of the unfortunate exceptions...hmph!)

Okay well i would advise one of the big halls, so glen or monte. the small halls arent as well connected with transport, they dont run as many events, and some are pretty damn ar away like bencraft (not sure if that counts as a proper small hall or not).

The food in catered isnt amazing, but its usually edible, kind of like school food.

I would say dont bother with ensuite, its really not worth it, and your bathroom gets cleaned monday, tuesday, thursday and friday by a cleaner if its shared. Get a room with a sink though.

Glen is closer to uni but the bus links are pretty crappy, theres like 2 busses in each direction each hour, so when it comes to going to town to go to ASDA you will struggle a bit and probs have to change at highfield a lot. glen has an overpriced shop actually in the site.

wessex lane is right next to stoneham common which is nice, the actual buildings arent as nice as some of the buildings in glen, but you never really know where your going to be put. there are 8 busses an hour into town and 6 busses an hour to the airport (which might be your best train station for going home). but its more like a 20 minute walk whereas glen is a 10 minute walk, and the route is a slight hill so not ideal for cycleing. There is a tesco metro pretty close.

I see....

looks like my top 3 are gonna be highfield and glen

thanks a lot for your help

hmm.....awesome

thanks a lot, you've given me a lot to digest....will probably end up in glen or highfield now
Yeah it sounds like glen is what you want, i would double check on the unilink website the busses to go to the hospital, as you will have to go there a lot, U6H goes to the hospital, i think you will find it easier from glen than highfield, but double check.

edit: i just looked, if you are at glen or highfield you will need to walk to campus and get the bus from campus, there is a direct bus from wessex lane, but i remember it was always pretty rammed with medics+other students, when it gets to highfield campus all the non medics will get off and create some space so it should be okay, my friend used to walk round the corner to the bus stop before monte to get the bus to the hospital.

http://www.unilinkbus.co.uk/pdfs/networkmap.pdf this map has the halls on it as little houses, so you can see where they are in relation to the busses

Got my results -

Communicating and Researching Mathematics - 54
Groups and Modules - 62
Biological Fluid Dynamics - 67
Numerical Methods - 84 :h:

Gives me an average of 66.8 - just goes to show mathematicians can't write essays. Complaining about that 47 I got too.

Also, been on campus as a Smurf again since 8.30 this morning - 9am lecture shoutouts on 4 hours sleep are NOT fun.
note to self: don't employ for communicating maths...
Lol.

The module was basically two research projects on areas of Maths we'd never studied before.

As far as actually teaching other people I'm really good - my best mate Marko got 81.8 for this semester with my help, so he can attest to that. :p:

He he... I was just kidding... don't employ me with anything to do with rocks.... I'm such a bad geologist..

I got 97 in Calc I
What's going on at Twisted tonight? I can't decide between Twisted or Bliss.
Silent Disco in Twisted tonight.

Loads of campaign teams will be out there, and I'll be Smurfed up again. :h:

Also been told I can't appeal against that coursework mark. :erm:

Congrats! I know a couple of guys who averaged 96 in first year Maths - if you keep up the hard work you could do like they have - they're still averaging around 88-90 at the moment. :yy:

Thing is with me, I'm very good at writing/teaching Maths and working things out/learning quickly, but I'm always too 'nice' in the way I teach - I stick to simple language rather than being completely professional about it.

Not looking forward to my dissertation next year. Ugh.

Thanks! that's really encouraging. hopefully i can keep the work up, but we'll see, i guess.

yeah, i'm really not looking forward to having to do a long piece of work.

Have you thought about what you'll do your dissertation on?

Dunno, there's a few options available, though they're all rather horrible.

I really enjoyed Fluid Dynamics so I think I'll look at modelling water pressure in relation to dam-breaking - seems interesting enough.

How did you do in the other modules? Think mine were something like DEs 77, Calc I 73, LA I 61 (didnt revise), NT&C 65.

sounds interesting. do you absolutely have to choose from a list?

Also, are you doing topology? I'm really looking forward to taking more pure.

other modules, DEs - 85, LA - 92, NT - 81. Average nowhere near 96...!

Definitely congrats!

You'll have to choose two pairs from Pure, Applied and Stats for next year - I took Pure and Applied.

Not doing Topology I'm afraid, I'm geared very much towards Applied Maths!

Means I don't have a choice for my fourth year though.

Dissertation (double module)
Groups & Symmetries
Differential Geometry
Further Differential Equations
Gravitational Waves
plus two that I can't remember :p:

Thanks

You'd think in your fourth year you would have the most choice! Seems odd. Anyway, they look interesting, i guess.

Are most people taking pure, or applied?
